John Deere 2140 PTO

The other evening while baling, the PTO did not stop when the dashboard lever was returned to the off (down) position. I did wonder if it would be related to a low oil level, but after topping back up today, it is still spinning when it should be disengaged.

A few reasons I have read are:
Warped PTO clutch disc and/or plates
Worn PTO brake lining
Leaking oil supply line to PTO brake
Faulty PTO valve not fully shifting from PTO clutch to PTO brake
Low hydraulic pressure to PTO brake.

These all sound like taking the tractor apart. Does anyone have any experience of this issue and how to diagnose it?

What is involved with fixing a PTO issue on a JD 2140?

Thanks

Now Then..
Check that clip 'No 6' is in place..
8 screws out, floor out, 3 x ⅜" bolts out with a 9/16" socket and take the top housing off the shift cover. You'll need 2 O-rings and a gasket plus the clip probably..

First job, switch the tractor off and see if you can turn the shaft by hand. If it won’t turn the plates have welded themselves together. If it does turn start checking the control valves etc.

The PTO shaft will not turn by hand with the engine off, and in the disengaged position. Does that suggest an issue with the PTO brake or PTO clutch?

Sounds like the plates have been slipping and welded themselves together. First thing to do is pressure test the transmission to see what condition the transmission pump and other ancillary’s (mfwd, hi/lo) are in.
Will be a case of cab off and split transmission to fix accordingly after that.
Personally I’d just re-seal everything while I’m in there as the pto clutch is the last bit to come out so you need to remove the hi/lo and mfwd anyway.

Ps, system pressure should be 25bar but it’s best to test lube pressure as this will give a better indication of the pump health and show any leaks. Should be seeing 3-6bar at the test fitting on top of the front hydraulic pump with the oil hot. Disengage the mfwd and shift the hi/lo to see if the pressure drops off to check for leakage.

'System pressure' was always 10.5 bar (150 Psi) when I was a lad at JD training..

Thank you all for your advice. Sounds like this will be a rather large job. Pretty unfortunate right in the middle of hay making on a one tractor small holding, but things don't break when t hey are not being used!
