I have a 2140 and it' becoming a real chew to get it started now it' gettin colder! Can any1 tell me if it has a glowplug? Had a look at the book and it says to turn the start switch anti clockwise but when I do the lights just go out on the dash until I turn it clockwise again and it tries to crank. Anybody got any info would be much appreciated.

Yeah that sounds about right, if you hold it there long enough you’ll see smoke out the chimney. Then turn it to start it’ll go no problem, that’s what I do with my 3050.

Thanks for that. suppose I haven't been holding it long enough cause I thought something was faulty. Is that the glow plug heating or is it something in the air intake that heats up ?

Is it SG2 cab? If it is take printed circuit out of both of lh & rh dash panels and resolder the pins that connect the plugs to the dash wiring loom they will have cracked (dry joint) 48 joints in total I think, also check main electrical socket in front of cab, above fuel filter. These tractors are getting on a bit now though, what hours has she done ? Shouldn't need heater if the batteries are tip top and starter not "lazy".

Agree with this if you have enough cracking speed it shouldn't need heat.

Perhaps depends on which part of the world he is in, but I'd agree that in NW England the 40 and 50 series JD's always used to spring into life all year round, so perhaps batteries / starter might be getting tired.

I have had 2 of them for over 20 years and use them round the yard almost every day, I can't remember having to use heat, it is usually the batteries or the starter motor (each have had 2or 3 and average 13000 hours) with mine
