John Deere 3420 cooling

I have had my 3420, shutting itself down lately and today got to looking up the error codes. They were about engine coolant temperature. So looking at the actual engine/radiator, the engine was hot but the radiator was cold so obviously not circulating. Does anybody have any tips or is it straight to get the dealer out?

why would you think the problem is electronic ?

With respect, call a mechanic to look at it.

Fairly easy quick check of the broken impeller. Grab the bottom rad hose by the pump and get someone to rev the engine to 2000rpm. Engine is cold and thermostat is closed if the water pump impeller is broken then the hose won't go tight and you will feel no flow.

If it’s not physically not getting hot, as in very hot then, it’s new ecu. Had that on my 3420.

As above had a new ECU on ours a few year back.

Hmm, I have two, I wonder if it’s easy to swap the écu over to see

I put a fuse in the x6 fuse position, turned on the ignition and counted the flashes

so can I just swap to see if the other starts cooling - or I’ll end up with nothing running at all ?

You can swap it sure.
The ECU doesn't control the cooling at all, it only reads the temp sensors and acts on the information.
Personally I would suspect/test/look at the coolant pump and thermostat first.
How many hours has it done??

Oh, just a mechanical thermostat? Cool
About 6,500 hrs.

....the waterpump failedon our 3200....causing headgasket failure....

As said ...first thing to check and easy to replace..

I tried holding the hose on the machine without a problem (it’s at home) and I couldn't feel anything

Hold the bottom hose and get someone to rev the engine then if the pumps working you will feel the hose swell in your hand.

Once the machine has shut down (due to being too hot), what procedure do you take to restart the engine?
Does the ecu need rebooting somehow.
I have a suspicion my machine has just done the same thing but we can't get it restarted.
