Hi all, I’m looking at buying a used John Deere 5090m it’s on 5000hours mainly on a feeder and yard work. No loader. It all seems sound but obviously I’m aware they are a much cheaper built tractor than the 6000 series we are used to. Anyone think good or bad of this range? Thanks

Having had one on demo, the gearbox was very crude on the one we had compared to the 6000 series- although this probably wouldn't matter with yard work. Pick up hitch is a bit flimsy too, you'll soon bend the lift arms if you're working with full bigger trailers. The engines have some grunt about them, they'll start a full diet feeder in 540E no bother if you put a few revs on. In terms of reliability, there are very few electrics to go wrong but they're not a German built machine if I remember correctly so that generally means something might have been assembled wrong.

Don't. Waste your money.

The transmission is Terrible and terrible to work on. I avoid them like the plague to work on.

Try and squeeze to a 6030. You won't regret it.

Thanks guys, pretty much the conclusion I’ve come to myself now! Doesn’t seem a bad tractor but definitely seems weak compared to 6000 etc...
