On my Valtra I have to put pto in then out quickly so the mower just takes up spinning, then in again for full rotation.
Or, I now run my mower in 1000 rev gear, but run at 540, take up is fine, and I use a lot less shear bolts.

Tell him to go find another JD of similar vintage. If that starts it ok he then knows his is at fault. If not try it on another brand of tractor. if that's ok then it's the JDs in general that are the problem.

Surely a small accumulator in that line would be the best bet.
Why go to the expense of an accumulator when the hose is the accumulator. Just something to break off when tapped etc. Also the hose would only need to be short maybe at a guess 100mms. We are only dealing with 200psi max.
 
The chap says he's on tickover when he engages the PTO but it's still too sharp.

I asked him if he'd tried turning the PTO button slowly... be he says it won't.
Can you upgrade the PTO shaft and lobes to bigger size up? I've run alsorts behind my Deere and the pto is pretty soft starting at low revs to be honest? Surely the flail is belt drive? If so it should take out any shock from a bigger shearbolt and act as a clutch? If not could you upgrade him to slip clutch pto shaft? I know these are all pretty expensive ways round it, just thinking of how I'd do it without fecking with the tractor.

It's looking like a bigger PTO shaft is the way to go.
 
Yes. I have supplied 24 machines of this type previous to this one, without any problems. The machine is the same and the PTO shaft the same.

It has me flummoxed - more so as I'm not there to actually witness what the customer is doing [wrong, pehaps?].
I'd pop over with the shaft in person if you can, have a look see for yourself if it's not too far away. What are your mfrs like on warranty? I got Fock all for sorting pumps on warranty, just the new one, glad I'm out of it now.

It's 170 miles away (n)

The manufacturers are pretty good with warranty claims. They never question, they just replace on demand (not that I have had much to claim on - just a cracked sprayer lid and similar little bits).

The thing is, there is nothing to claim on. The machine has had it's PDI (by me) and was starting up perfectly behind my Claas 456. It seems to be a tractor/operator problem - hence the thread.

I have told him he's welcome to try another shaft if he's happy to do so, as long as he does not go shredding a load of granite then cry warranty on me :) He's a decent chap, I'm sure he won't do anything too silly.

Is it a 540 box on the flail? A 1000 box will be easier on the start off torque. Also what size shaft is on it? Ours was supplied with a W2400 Waltercheid on a 5 belt Maschio.

When disaster strikes with these it's usually the belts that slip and give way.
It's a 540.

I can't remember the size of the shaft - the info is in the office at work. The same shaft is sold with hundreds, if not thousands of others, though.

Hmmm. Just searched Google for a 'soft start pto' and @smcapstick turned up. Seems as if I might be getting the same problem with the similar mower but a different colour. This is what happens when the driven turns on the pto at half throttle. As has been said my thought too was to put a slip clutch on to take away the sudden hit on the pto. It's driven by 115 Mc Cormick......As also said the switch is either on or off!

A bit late for the OP but I find the first the initial start of the day (cold) is very severe, the subsequent ones are "soft". With our topper I remove the PTO, then start the drive, stop it then reattach the drive.
Also turning the steering also diverts some oil away from the PTO starting engagement.

Hadn't thought of the steering idea. I'll give that one a try......I've stood and heard this one being started up at half throttle with the belts screaming so not really surprised at what has resulted. Straight through shaft, no shear pin or slip clutch.
It's been suggested that the problem is that the tractor senses no load on the pto at the start and so gives it full wack into gear. JD's in particular. It's a big lump underneath to get spinning but it's easy to turn the pto by hand at the gearbox.

Flail topper I use occasionally, will break the shear bolt nearly every time on start up unless the topper is at a height so that the shaft is straight. This is also due to pto popping in too fast on a MF tractor.

Syngenta grassweeds technical manager, Georgina Wood, urges Axial Pro treatment as soon as conditions allow, once weeds are actively growing.

“That offers the chance to control wild oats more cost effectively at lower rates, whilst there is still the flexibility to tailor application rates up to 0.82 l/ha for larger or over wintered weeds and difficult situations.

“The variability of crops and situations this season means decisions for appropriate Axial Pro rates and application techniques will need to be made on a field-by-field basis,” she advised.
