John Deere 6630 Wing PTO switch

I have a problem with a exterior PTO switch on our 6630, its seized solid. I think it is the reason why the PTO doesn't always engage when operated from inside the cab and annoyingly causes the PTO to disengage mid fert spreading or at some other awkward moment!

As I don't have need for the exterior switch, it is a simple 2 wire switch I can simply unplug?

Also save me some faffing do you access it by removing the tail lights or from underneath the mudguard?

No not a simple two wire switch and yes you reach it by removing panel under the fender not through the rear light unit. They monitor switch off and on state. Yeah I've been out spannering hence the slow reply 😄

Update... seized external switch has been replaced with a shiny new one.

Has not solved the fudging problem though. PTO can take 10 or more attempts before it will actually engage rather than enrage :banghead: Where does one start to diagnose the true cause?

PTO switch in cab. If you have no errors on the CC and it selects PTO speed without errors.
Dont think I have a CC on our basic spec, is that the fancy control panel on the premium? If the PTO switch has failed how would the PTO light flash on the dask when the switch is on. Does the cab PTO switch have more outputs than simply on and off?

Yes. It has dual change over contacts since it is a safety critical component.
was about to go fetch a new cab pto switch but been continuity testing this one with the volt meter. There are 3 wires. when switch is off there is no resistance between the 2 outer pins on the plug, when switch is turned to on this changes such that there is then no resistance between the middle and one outer Before I go buy an expensive replacement... would that not mean the switch is working and the problem lies elsewhere?

Hi, what’s the art of getting the PTO switched off? Changing a mud guard on a 6830. But struggling to get the PTO switch off.

Ah right, can't help you there. I do know that they are some sort of closed loop as the pto won't work if you take the switch out.
You could just wire a switch to the coil above the pto shaft. Take power from the D plug and splice it in, put a fuse and switch in between and hey prest, no annoying safety features either.
The tractor will throw up error codes though.

A new mudguard with switch is £36 from nick young, possibly similar for the dealer.
wiring it direct as above will mean you lose the soft start, so everything will start with a bang. Soon spend the price of a switch on knackered UJ,s, shear pins, etc etc. Even the pto clutch plates in the tractor.
Plus where’d do you mount this switch so it is easily accessible in case of emergency. I know some so called safety features can be annoying, and don’t really improve safety, but the pto is not one I would be messing with.

switch on its own is £24, but normally the bush is fecked by the time you get it out. If you value your time, just remove the plug, and break or cut the old unit out as described above.

Ah right didn't know about softstart. The machines that are used with the outside switch don't tend to be the most powerhungry though.
With alot of tractors you have to keep the outside switch in for a couple of seconds to switch on, that is a precaution I can live with. When you have to activate it inside first isn't.

Good points though.
