Hi has anyone any experience with a John Deere 678? Considering one for doing our own haylage some hay and straw. Won’t be doing a big number of bales.
Makes a good bale in haylage provided it's not too big a swath. Bale transfer doesn't like crossing slopes of sidlings.
Net mechanism is generally excellent with any type of net. At the end of the roll, some don't put enough brake force on the roll. If you put an empty net tube next to what's left, that usually worked to end the roll
They won't bale dry straw. There's no roller where the net is introduced, and because of this, dry straw bales just stop turning in the chamber.
They're getting on in years, so check the condition of the chains and sprockets. Take a big pry bar and check for play in the roller bearings, particularly the bottom two, and the one on the bottom of the door.
Watch the door hinges as they ARE a weak point. Probably makes the best bale of any roller baler in silage &haylage as they hold there shape really well as netwrap covers edges better than any other balers with the cover edge system.
I owned a very late JD 678 and it wasn’t a bad baler as later models were well improved on the original but transfer was slow compared to Fusions and didn’t like big heavy rows of grass and drive was no where near as strong The wrapper worked reasonably well but was very low to the ground and could be easily grounded and could damage the rear film grabber by tearing it off so watch out for gateways with big dips etc.
If can be had cheap enough it should do the job and save having to return and wrap until stupid o clock
Run a krone 1250 round pack at moment which I like. Don’t do many bales but want do my own. Like the idea of bales been wrapped when I’m done baling as There’s only me. 678 I was looking at is a 2008. Also considering an in line wrapper behind my krone.
