John Deere 6800

Looking at a John Deere 6800 in a local dealer. It's a 1995 model with 40k and a two speed pto. 13,000 hours. I want this tractor to do a bit of bailing with a McHale f550 and slurry, roughly 150 hours a year. I was told the pto speeds are 540E and 1000 by the dealer. I looked up other 6800's around and other dealers say its 540 and 1000 speed pto. Not 540E. Does anyone know for sure if it is 540 or 540E? And if it is 540E are there any disadvantages to this higher speed? I'm wondering if it'd be suitable for a vacuum pump on a slurry tanker? Would it be too quick?

We had a 1995 6800,ours only had 540 e and 1000 and was fine on a tanker ,also did a lot of round baling and was really good for that.long while ago,but was reg no M867 RWL I think.i did quite a few hours with it and liked it a lot.

540E doesn't mean the pto runs any quicker it just means that the engine is at a lower rpm when at 540 on the shaft. Would say that's a good thing for the vacuum tanker and or baler?

Thanks for the reply! Did it ever give you any problem? Or anything to look out for?

Well all I'm worried about it is I'm spreading slurry at the minute with a 100 hp tractor. And when sucking slurry into the tank I use 540 with no revs (ticking over revs). Would 540e on a 120 hp tractor with ticking over revs not suck it in quicker than my 100hp tractor is at the minute? I don't want to damage my pump on the tanker

In heavy pto work 540e is a disadvantage cos the tractor would lose about 20 hp that's the reason fiat tractors were so good on the pto as the tractor was 540 at 1950 revs versus a ford which was 1650 approx

So you're saying I'll only have 100hp at the pto? The main reason I'm interested in buying a 6800 is because I need extra hp to work the mchale baler. And I have 100 at the minute with my tractor at home

No massive probems, had a head gasket about 6000 hours, and a couple of gear cables.wasnt a brilliant starter in the cold, was better after head gasket done but still not that great.oh,also had the electric fuel pump to prime it inthe tank pack up.really good tractor though at that time, quiet, comfy ,easy to use.nice and simple to look after.watch the pto shaft housing isn't too worn can take out some play by new shaft itself fairl cheap, but housing wears too.rock shaft on arms is bad for wearing out but we drilled ours to make it greasable .assistor rams can seize up. If arms seem slow to go down or won't at all then needs rams off and remove rod ,clean out, maybe new seal or maybe get away with just a clean out,not serious though.bushes on front axle pivot, look for wear?and track rods ,rock the tyres ,axle and feel, listen

I have a 6900. Not 40k and it seems very slow on the road these days. Very good cold starter. Hedge trimming in -13 last month, still starting easy, though cold enough for hedge cutter cables to be frozen solid:whistle:.
Do the 40k ones have e and f gears? They are blanked off on mine

Oh, think the pto is 540 not e, can't be sure though as only used it in 1000

I used to have a 6400 deere and it seems both the 6400 and 6800 wear in the same places. I thought I'd be safer asking if they had any different problems but they don't seem to have. What was the recommended hp to power that rp435 you had?

I wouldn't think max power will not be at engine speed giving 540E.
So if you have to go to the max power band for the engine, the PTO will be running above 540, good or bad.

if you have 2 6800 one with standard and one with economy the standard would leave the other sitting if mowing esp up a hill no question
