John Deere 6900 stiff spools

Got a 96 JD 6900 here and spools are tight to move once they go into the detents very tight to pull out, will it be a case of stripping th3 end caps or is there something else to look at don’t think it’s cables it’s definitely something on detents

Got a 6920 that had this trouble. Posts on here somewhere as I had some real trouble understanding what was wrong. Essentially it boiled down to rusty balls and the only tip I have is to disassemble with your head inside a bin bag!

It will be rust under the spool caps that change between closed and open center hydraulics . If you carefully remove the Allen key bolts and remove the contents from the top making careful note of the sequence. Mind you don’t lose the small ball bearings which will be rusty and clean all parts before lightly smearing in grease before reassembly. You can get repair kits with new balls if yours are beyond salvage.

Go on jd online parts then you will be able to see what you are dismantling before diving in. It’s fairly straight forward to do as even I managed it on a 6800 last winter.
