John Deere 6M

What are people's experience of the 6M series, and specifically the 6155M?

We have had one on demo and was quite impressed. It's not quite as refined as our 6155R but when specced the as closely as possible to an R there's a £12k difference in price.

There are differences of course, the cab is smaller, mechanical cab suspension not hydraulic, no power boost, 2x450 series/ 2x 200 series spools instead of 4x 450 series on the R, and as I mentioned it's that bit less refined. Having never driven a Powerquad tractor before I found the range changes a bit jerky/ tricky. Especially from D down to C. Does this get better with time? Are the R series the same or is it a trait of the M's?

But £12k is £12k, it takes a lot of earning, and to be fair the M will do everything we ask of it.

What will the £12k price difference look like in 4 years time with 6000 hours on the clock?

Has anyone had an M and wished they had stepped up to an R?

For what years down the line I’d rather buy the 6155m, if your arms are long enough to reach ever gear the power quad will take some beating imo!

You could say premium has more technology on it so that's why would hold its value
Because even though people say they want a basic tractor. Most people don't. If I had the choice between the 2 I would want the r series. Saying that would be fine for a loader tractor. We've a t7 200 classic and wouldn't replace it with a sidewinder model as it's all we need.

Technology also has its down sides when it fails.

if it was my money the m would be my choice. simplicity and less to go wrong in long run.

This is one area I disagree with. The M is no 3050. Everything is controlled with CANbus in the same way as the R series is, electronic engine management, all the emissions rubbish, all the sensors everywhere and most of the processors are exactly the same, it's just different programming and a different user interface.

However- 30 years down the line from the invention of electronic tractors, why are we still worrying about the reliability of electronics? It's a nonsense really, the reality is the reliability of it all was all sorted out 10-15 years ago, and improved upon ever since. We've had no specific electronic issues with any tractor since a bloody nuisance Massey 6160 from 1996.

If the M's are using a simpler turbo like the Standards were then that alone won't be a bad idea.
Do you really need a screen to go into for spotlight settings? Try teaching a 60+ year old how to do that ?
The money saving has definitely benefits when your buying yourself.

I would say most 6000 hour buyers would prefer a more basic tractor with less things to go wrong, so they'd prefer an M to an R, therefore in that respect it should hold its value better? Possibly more of an export market for a more basic tractor too...

The engines are virtually identical now, including the turbo.

Granted, the worklights idea on the R is bloody ridiculous.
