Atu on a 1800 screen & and an atu on a 2600 screen 2 different tractors both have the same problem they cut out the steering it’s not all the time but it’s got very bad now. The one unit is 5yrs old the other 3 approx they have always do it but can’t put up with it any more. What’s causing the problem. Moved 2600 into combine for harvest not once did it fail but that had its own steering valve and wiring harness.

The atu needs quite a few amps when it’s engaged, the tractor voltage may be fine but it will probably be dropping amps when it’s trying to operate the motor through a power socket. Try powering from the battery and see what happens. Mine use to do it all the time on my old jd combine, it wouldn’t work at all with the lights on!
 
The “rule of thumb” with this gear is always directly onto battery terminals as said - voltage will show fine otherwise on standstill with no other draws, but could “sag” enough to trigger a fault, when everything else (and the steering controller etc) is also drawing a decent current.

Chuck in some poor quality in-cab power sockets (Cobos etc. they’re all basically shite) the odd dodgy earth, poor pin connection, bit of moisture/dirt and you have the perfect recipe for intermittent faults.

The least worst method is direct onto battery as your bypassing a lot of these problem areas and also getting the most juice.
 
Does this not run the battery down when parked? Is there a switch somewhere?
Shouldn't do, I know my old Topcon had a permanent live and switched (ignition) live and it was perfect.

You could run both feeds, permanent and switched though an....err switch, but then you can't do stuff like set the unit to remain powered for a pre-determined period after you switch the ignition off.

This means you lose the ability to regain a fast fix and/or convergence if you switch the tractor off for a short while.

Ideally you need a permanent live (a good one from the battery) and a switched live, the switched live isn’t as critical as the battery live as the atu and screen doesn’t pull many amps through it.
Having a switched live also enables the screen to save its settings during shutdown and use the quick start, as has been mentioned earlier in the thread.

Atu Steering playing up could be the battery getting week the electric fan on the seed drill sucking some power after about an hour the steering starts to play up. Along with the air con and other stuff didn’t even get the lights on. Best way round that (better alternator)
