From the website if I was looking for one then I would be off to see the one at burdens. To give me an idea of what money got you what condition. If you want to know what to look before you go to see it then just shout!
Yeah that would be great if you can pm what to look for?

I would have a look in the grain tank and take off the lower inspection cover to the engine bay. There are a series of metal hydraulic pipes there which run to the front of the combine. It often gets overlooked when cleaning and muck builds up there causing corrosion. Pain in the neck when they go. If they have been changed to rubber pipes then great.

I have an 1174 which is the same as the 1177, except for the engine, the 74 has the European 3650 tractor and the 77 has the American 4055 engine. A marvel of machine, easy and relatively cheap to repair. JD parts are new, used and second brand. Its weak part is the silent-blocks of the screen box, but if you are attentive you should not have problems. Well regulated does not throw grain and you can buy it for a price that you will soon amortize.
Does your 1174 have air con and loss monitors?

Spot on. My new to me 1166 has just done exactly this.

I have a 1170 combine which I got brand new in 2001. It's been a good basic combine and cuts 25 acres quite easily in a day. It was made in Brazil and some parts especially to do with the air con have Brazilian part numbers. This often causes problems when I go to the local JD dealership. The majority of parts are straight forward to get and come off either a 1177 or 1075 so come next day. Not many electrics to go wrong either.

Indeed it has air conditioning, it would be impossible to go in a closed cabin without air in the month of July in Spain. The 1174, mechanically and of dimensions is the same as the 1177, both are of German manufacture, what happens is that it has less power, the same difference as between a 2254 and a 2258. The 1170, 1450 and 1550 are Brazilian.
The issue of pipes under the engine is exactly as you say above.
When I make little progress in harvesting, I hire an external one and problem solved

Thanks folks lots of good information. What about the Claas 405,410 Lexion. Anyone have thoughts on them? Parts expensive?
Personally I think you won’t go far wrong with a John Deere, parts aren’t cheap but generally available, Claas will be ok until you have to sell a kidney to pay for the bits. Well over rated in my humble opinion!

You do not have to go to main dealer for most parts, JMT, APH, AP Tractorspares, etc have most bits. IF you maintain them they will be Ok, if you do not, they will kick you, hard. As an example, the main top drum variatior pulley has 3 inexpensive nylon bushes between the sliding halves, you have to remove a cover plate to inspect them. If they wear through and wreck the pulley hub, Claas will want £3500 for a new pulley.
I would say a Lex 405 would be in the TX 63, Dominator 98, etc. output bracket. It will also be narrower on the road and slightly less busy under the covers than the bigger models and a bit less sophisticated, having manually adjusted sieves and manual tank cover raising etc.
Road width is largely governed by the tyre options fitted, but a five Walker on big rubber will still be 3.6m.

I’ve been in touch with a dealership that’s selling a 1193 JD2054 Combine with 14ft header. Done around 3200 hours. What are these machine like folks? Wondering if it’s too big but the header is a good size for what I’m needing

I have one. I really like it. Better output than a 1177 judging by my neighbour. It’s slightly underpowered but that’s only an issue if you are chopping and unloading on the move.

Good machine, 14' is a small header for size of machine, check oil seal on pto gearbox on end of engine, if its leaking its pto off and its a fork lift job, also make sure back of fuse box is cleaned out each year mouse heaven with wires.
