John Deere Gen4 won't do variable rate.

We have a 6215r with a Gen 4 display. We have a 2016 Kuhn 40.2 spreader, 2014 JD750a drill and a Vad Rapid Drill think it's a 2007. The Gen4 I am told will not do variable rate with my machines, they are too old. Anyone else having similar problem, seems a never ending spend with GPS !

We had similar with our horsch sprinter, so we put a 2630 screen in alongside the gen 4 which worked fine so updated drill software & it works on the gen 4 fixed screen now? Maybe worth updating a machine to try? Cheers dh

go trimble or topcon

until JD stop the unlock craziness and making it hard to use with 3rd party kit without paying again it’s not worth owning no matter how good it is

they have the business model totally wrong on their tech imo and will suffer long term ad a result of not fixed

we started off with greenstar 15 years ago but i saw this coming and sold it all to replace with Topcon that has moved through various tractor brands and machines ever since - was a good move with hindsight !

over the years we have replaced some hardware as it’s worn out but am yet to ever bu an unlock of any sort, we run VRA and rtk steering on every machine we use, various brands

You need the premium activation to do VR through the 4600, don’t let the dealer fob you off saying your processor is to old either. There is an update program to change the processor to the later one, you’d probably have to pay a bit of labour but only an hour of a job, I was there when they did mine.
If you bite the bullet and get the ultimate activation you get the automated turn also.

New Masseys come with either Trimble or Topcon, so I was wondering what made you opt for Topcon over Trimble, as I can't see much difference between them.

not a lot of difference now but I took this decision 15 years ago when there was more difference and we put a topcon RTK base in. Kee as it was then was a better package for us than Trimble at that time

Activation are buy as you need not pay for something you don’t need

that's would be ok if it didn't cost the same or more than atop con or trimble that doesn't need a load of unlocks

JD really should change the business model on this, it might be the most profitable model but its not going to do them any favours with customers long term

So it's a toss of a coin? Thanks for a quick reply.

Im not up to speed on the detailed pro's and cons of Trimble vs topcon these days, but I do still like the Topcon, all I can say its its been very little trouble over the years and its very user friendly

they all do basically the same thing so its really all about price and hidden unlock costs like JD love really

consider backup as well - that's where JD excel I think, LH (our Topcon support) are good but don't have a national network of dealers like JD do for example

Don't the new Masseys come with Trimble or Novatel instead of Trimble or Topcon, just like Fendt moved from Toopcon to Trimble/Novatel.

The main change I think is that they abandoned the Topcon X30 (AGCO variant) screen and have that part integrated to the tractor screen (like Fendt did already at Topcon time). The GNSS receiver from Trimble or Novatel does less than the Topcon AGI-4 variant used to do. I believe the main difference between Trimble and Novatel is rangepoint or centerpoint support from Trimble if one does not want to go to full RTK.
