Joint ill in lamb's

Anybody got a miracle cure? Have got a few limping round, dipping navels when born! Although cant help but think the moment they hit the floor the bacteria has time to be in! Heard of people jabbing every lamb with betamox when born but really don't want to go down this route! Cheers

Had big problem last year with this!
Turned out as we were feed8ng silage on the floor in individual pens which was just sotting there going wet etc that caused it!!
Jagged every lb with Vitessel which had it but was a varied success rate!!

Our vets make a joint I'll mix. It's basically pen strep and cortisone I think. Works well if you catch them early.

Never used it before for Joint Ill but local Vet said to use it last year as he was saying there is a connection between White Muscle Disease and Joint Ill so it should of helped!
As stated has varied success with ot

we had a problem several years ago and we took advice from the vet and every lamb is injected with Betamox when born. It is enough to sort the joint ill - of course combined with 10% iodine dip on the navel.
Vet said it was a build up of infection in the shed - as we could not change the said, went for the option to treat all lambs.

Noroclav and flunixin for treatment of any lambs with joint ill works well and 50/50 iodine/methylated spirits on navel as born and repeat 3-4 hours
We used to have a problem but doing navels twice and keeping individual pens well bedded and disinfected has saved us alot off trouble

I used Tylan last year. I think it was half ml under the skin every day until you couldn't catch them any more. Also used metacam as well. I seemed to have great success with it.

Might be wrong, normally am, but I thought metacam was a pain relief or anti inflammatory so if so does that just not just aid relief not cure?

You're right, as usual.:) It reduces the swelling and relieves pain. My previous vet suggested that helped to get the ab into the inflamed & infected joint, but don't know if that's right. It definitely helps them outrun the jabber sooner though.(n)

There is a study (a few years old) that suggested that amoxycillin (=Betamox LA and others) was the best antibiotic for the most common cause of joint ill, with 50% of strains resistant to oxytet (Alamycin LA).

They need some anti-inflammatory, but anecdotally they do better with steroid than things like Metacam.

I think it is important to give at least 7 days worth of treatment and identify animals early. Some are vastly better after a single injection but that is no excuse not to complete the course. A significant number of these relapse and never respond as well a second time.

Colostrum vital. Cleanliness vital. No evidence that dipping navels is important - it is likely the infection route is via the mouth.

Also, if you have a large number affected then it is worth doing some sampling to establish the cause (untreated lambs) as some causes can be effectively vaccinated against.
