I lived in New Mexico for a while, seemed like quite a few of the big 3-4000 cow dairies didn't actually own much land, all feed was bought in. I put silage stacks in at some dairies, hauled in from cropping farmers, that wouldn't be used for a couple of years, but they had to ensure supply in a bad year.
No idea if that's typical of the rest of the country though?

That was purchased grain, I think they grew their own forage.

Vermont and the northeast in general is considered a high cost area. They don’t have the availability of of cheap grain and byproducts. Transportation costs add up
