Joy riders

I am not a farmer, but an ex agricultural engineer who now lectures at a local ag college, so asking for opinions.

my house is surrounded by farmland, the back garden looks out into fields that I th8nk are down to winter wheat, just emerging. About an hour ago I saw a Landrover discovery drive past the end of my garden at at least 30-40 mph, very fast for the ground conditions. The LR drove, at speed, around the field boundary and back onto a public road, via a short stretch of track.

I have the number of the farmer that owns the land but know the farm office is closed at weekends. Would I be in order giving him a ring on Monday or am I being a bit of a ‘curtain twitcher’? Could be legit but it didn’t look like someone checking the crop. Don’t want to appear like a local busy body, but would you want to know if local lads were using your fields as an off road track?

cheers

I would love to be told if someone is joyriding around my fields . This year we had a company in putting trial plots in our OSR it took them two days to mark out and then drill the plots then some barsteward came and did donuts right though them .

Thanks chaps. Didn’t want to come across as a nosey “townie”, Will ring the farm office in the morning. The LR must have damaged the crop, belting about like that, cultivated right up to the hedge so would be surprised if it was legitimate.

I have had 3 lots of tracks across my fields now in the last 2 weeks, I think that they are looking for hares. A couple of neighbours have rung me each time this has happened and it never even crossed my mind that they might be anything but completely appreciated by me for their concern.

Hadn’t thought of Hares, they used to be a common sight round here but not seen one for ages. My neighbour saw the lads in the LR and said they threw a bottle out the window as they passed his house, so, probably local pond life from Harlow or Chelmsford. Just making a totally unwarranted assumption :)

It doesn't say that you have very similar pond life to me in your profile, they might even be the same people.

I think, as I get older, I am less tolerant. But the way people treat the countryside round here is a joke. From regular fly tipping to driving like the lanes are racetracks. Chatting to a young tractor driver a few months ago, he told me about the arguments he has with other road users whilst trying to get his 17 tonne tractor and plough in and out of fields and holding them up for a few minutes. As he said, “you are on your way from Tesco, where do you think Tesco’s gets your food?”, with a few expletives added. Seems to me, here in Essex anyway, it’s all about me me me. I want it, I want it now. So, “I want to take my LR off road, there is a field, so why not”. Moan over.

You want to try and move a flock of sheep or herd of cattle across a road - the cars try to thread between them, we have had 3 sheep run over, this is whilst the animals are going almost straight across the road with one or two people each side stopping traffic and straying animals, unbelievable

Only good thing about the high rainfall in this area, less tossers driving over the land.
You'd think that, they've been over some of ours, some of the wettest areas on the farm and still didnt manage to get stuck. God knows what they drive but it must float on water, they have been after the deer here, been round next door's 4 times according to their keeper. Cutting chains/locks and driving through hedges.

Use Waratah standards for keeping the sheep in line , tends to help stop traffic when aheep or cattle cross the road....???
