Father often recounts the story of when three herds of milking cows all going out to grass met in the middle of the village at a crossroads.

Was in the early 70's and while they were small herds of 20-60 cows it took a fair sort out!

Walking might not be as easy as first thought!
Bet there was some serious cow fights going on our start scrapping anytime two groups mix

Read an excellent book years ago by a chap who recreated the old droves from Skye to, I think, Crieff market. They had to swim them across from Skye, would love to see defra do a consultation on that.
We used to regularly walk cattle past the JCB factory, they would be spooked when they saw their reflections in the one way glass of the offices that could be hairy lol.

I’m sure there was some guy in Australia walked cattle over a thousand miles from one ranch to another huge numbers of them too bloody impressive may be a few more obstacles here though
In 1904 they took 20,000 cattle 3000km taking 18 months. Lots of other examples but how they knew where to go is unbelievable.

More locally in the 1950s 300 cattle were walked from Castle Douglas market to new grazings 12 miles away.

The logistics of finding enough water for the numbers of animals involved is incredible in itself must have been unbelievably difficult

Reckon there wouldn’t be much difficulty shifting a few hundred dairy animals 10 or so miles I’ve done around a hundred a couple miles easily enough don’t rush them and your grand but how they moved hill cattle and walked them dozens of miles to markets I’ve no idea

If they introduce expensive trailer inspections and endless red tape theoretically i could do all my local moves on foot again. Maybe we should all write our mps and just tell them if its to complicated to trailer my cows to grazing the other side of town then they are going right through the centre at peak rush hour!. Ever see the end of the film Chisum? 🤣🤣

'Chisum' is a great film! There's another film where they send cattle through a barricade, forget which one, 'Tell 'em we're coming in, Texas style!' YEEEHAA!!
