When we were having difficulties with the landlord and highways agency about putting a cow crossing in when we used to milk my old chap used to walk 200 cows down the main Aroad about a mile, the highways people said the cows weren’t a problem to them so no need for a crossing, that was just sport to our old chap, so he said well it’s no problem to me either an started walking them!! One morning he had 1500 cars behind him, if he saw someone he new he’d stop an the lead cow would stop so the rest would stop behind her, he didn’t give a feck, any abuse was met with a piece of alkathene across the bonnet! Had the newspaper here an all sorts, highways stomached about a month of that an then came wavering the white flag!!😂

A handling system on wheels to tow behind the tractor with the cattle contained but walking will be the way forward if the DEFRA proposals on animal transport are introduced. Trouble is there will be no livestock markets to walk them to. @JP1 might have his eye on sole distributed rights from the continent where they are in use. He should be along in a minute with the details.
Treibewagen could be the way forward for winter and high summer contained ivestock movement if the desk jockeys at DEFRA are allowed to get away with their most recent stupidity.

Used to walk sheep a couple of miles on A@B roads
over 20 years ago. The insurance companies would
freak out at the OPs proposal today and some farmers would probably
become uninsurable.

Having a pint in the beer garden of a Lake District pub one evening I was the only one sat down, why ? Well sheep were being moved down the road and everyone was stood up taking photos. Someone remarked that I probably saw this scene several times a week.
In the past drovers brought their sheep and cattle from the Marches into Shropshire to be sold, apparently this is where the cheque originated, as having sold their stock the drovers would have to walk back into Wales with cash, at the mercy of robbers and a promissory note would be safer.

Its bad enough when the cows get out and trample the neighbouring manicured gardens and village green, takes months of favours and dozens of bottles of wine to repay for the damage done in 20 minutes.

Imagine the compensation bills if this ever became reality.

We used to walked 250 ewes with lambs at foot to summer grazing other side of the village. About 3 miles.

it wasn’t my job to go in front shutting as many garden gates as I could but lots of drives with no gates.

Had about 10 people helping to keep them on the road but always some ewes would end up where they should not be.

Did it for many years, stopped when the village started to grow with lots of new houses and new people from outside the area not understand what was going on.

'Chisum' is a great film! There's another film where they send cattle through a barricade, forget which one, 'Tell 'em we're coming in, Texas style!' YEEEHAA!!
Yeeehaaa head’m for Darlington boys!! Que lots of whooping an gunfire!! I’d be up for that, I’d like to carry a gun but mrs reckons to many people would end up buried in unofficial graves!!🙈

Occupiers of roadside properties have a duty to keep said properties fenced against the road.

I walk sheep down roads here a few times a year. Furthest was about 3 miles.
Ewes are easy. I tried store lambs once...never again!
I always shut householders gates first but gaps in the hedges of arable fields are more of an issue.

I used to work with a man on a farm here in Wiltshire where he had worked all his life
He recalled his first days work as a lad was to cycle to the farm right early to help walk sheep to Wilton fair----(i've walked this and it's just over 14 miles, a fair trek with a mob of sheep??)
He said they walked the sheep there, the shepherd bought him his first pint (15yrs old?) and they got the train back to the local station.
The boss picked them up from there and drove him home as he was too knackered to cycle!
