Keeping moldboards from rusting

Hi all
Tried my Fergie 2 furrow plough out at a local plough day Saturday. I was pleased with how it turned out, I was by no means the best but neither did I make a complete hash. Had a fantastic day and was very well supported by other competitors who took time to chat and offer advice.
Just wondering what everyone uses to keep moldboards shiny and from going rusty in between matches?

WD40. Plough is kept inside. It will prevent rust all through the winter no problem.
Tried using a wax type rust preventative and it was not so good as the WD40 and you had to use a solvent to remove it as it made the soil stick.

For one to two weeks protection I use engine oil/WD40 in a 1:4 mix sprayed with a squirter bottle immediately after cleaning down after ploughing. For longer protection I use Waxoyl thinned with kerosene and painted on. I find it does not cause sticking but if you are not sure spray it with kerosene and rub it off.

I use gear oil or if extended periods will use grease as have an old keg that has been kicking around for years. I have used WD40 but not found it that great, went to Sherwood last year and WD'd the boards etc and by the time i got home there was already signs of surface rust but did wonder if it was anything to do with the salt they had spread on the roads.
I also have it on good authority that after flap wheeling etc the boards to get them cleaned up, some use marble polishing pads to take out the worst marks from flap wheeling.
Well done for having a go, it's a great class and very friendly, wont be long before you're hooked!!

comercial plough gets old engine oil if unused for a few days and morrises version of waxoyl for storage,2 coats brushed on allowing the first to dry overnight
£20 for 5 liters and that will cover the plough at least 10 times (4fur rev)

20 yards of ploughing cleanes the boards a treat

We used to work for an MF licencee overseas - the MF protection spec for stock and refurbished moldboards was Shell Ensis lightly brush painted. It wasn't cheap though. We used to export 205l drums at $650 USD a go

I push a tube of grease into a pot and mix with diesel, just enough to thin it down, then paint it on, it lasts all winter and will with stand rain if it makes it that far into the shed. (Small shed, big plough)

If you are doing a fair bit then all you need for match the match is WD40, duck oil or similar. Cheaper bought by the gallon. All motor spares shops and ag dealers do it. If you know an oil supplier they will have their own brand.

Word of warning - once there is salt on the roads then clean all the oil
off when you get home and oil it again - whatever you use. Salt destroys them and gets right in to them.

Morris md4 is the best ive come across been using it for 6 years, far better than wd 40,spray it on and it comes in a gal can,no need to rub it off before ploughing,i spray all the working shiny metal when I've finished .
