Keyless car crime

Untill yesterday it wouldn't have mattered if I had left the keys to my Defender in the ignition and the doors wide open as the damned thing wouldn't start with the key anyway. Only some persuasion with a hammer whilst turning the key would work.
The starter motor was full of 15 years of mud, dust, oil and diesel. Bit of a crash course in how electric motors come apart and more importantly back together was the order of the day. ;)

Being a bit slow, how are the two guys unlocking, then driving off with this car ?

They boost the signal from the key and unlock it, he had to go back and boost it again to start it, once running it will keep running without a key until its switched off.

My ford will unlock if someone touches the door handle if I am stood within 2m of the car with the key in my pocket!, (you can change the set up to "old school" though) it will not however start unless the key is inside the car, and wont lock if the key is inside.

These faraday pouches do work. Or a biscuit tin works great or some ally foil in a pinch.

Only works with keyless entry and keyless go cars.

Car regularly pings out a signal looking for fob to reply. If no reply or wrong reply, car stays locked etc. when correct fob is close by, it can be unlocked and engine started.

Thieves use two way receiver/transmitter. receive ping from car, transmit it to the other box at your front door (most people have the keys in the hallways or nearby) Key fob responds as it believes it's by the car. This is then sent back to the unit by car, car unlocks, ignition is active, thief starts it and drives away.

Its then fairly easy to obtain a new key and code it to the car with widely available software once you are able to access the OBD port. Or break car for parts.

So you keep your key in a pouch to stop it being cloned and then have to take it out the pouch to start your car? Lead lines trousers pockets coming to a store near you soon?
Low tech is sometimes the best defence.

I've had keyless entry/keyless start cars since 2008, but although the exploits have been known for a while car makers had relied on the fact that the radio hardware and software was quite expensive and difficult for the "man on the street" to get hold of to pull this sort of attack off.

Its only very recently become a widespread problem because the exploit using software defined radios has become very easy and very cheap to get hold of. The majority of mainstream cars now are keyless entry.

I could tell you how to build a pair of relay attack radios, hacked using the guts out of a Digital (DVB) USB stick and freely available SDR software on the web but that would be irresponsible.

P.S. lead is heavy and your daks will be on floor in no time , I recommend a fine metallic mesh weave. I am being semi serious :D:p

I am seriously thinking of getting a Disklok to fit on the steering wheel for my Discovery.

A friends neighbour did that after a failed attempt to steal his Lexus. Theif failed to get the handbrake off.......

Be back to the days of stoplocks....... I lost the key for one once RAC man got it off.......
