What sort of daily/weekly maintenance is needed on the likes of the pw80? I appreciate a lot will come down to condition/amount of use, but in general what do people find necessary to keep them well maintained and running properly?

Don’t get a Moto x 65/85 model they are light & fragile and designed to be washed & stripped down after every ride. They are also bloody quick & might frighten your lad. Start him off on a more steady 4 stroke type , till he gets his confidence up. Don’t buy a Chinese pit bike, they are made of balsa wood

Best £50 ever spent on fun here was an old Honda 125 As it will spend a lot of time on its side or in a hedge, no need for anything tidy, and they had many years fun out of it.

Yes, don't really want anything too fast. Appreciate it's down to the driver and he's a sensible sort (more than his little bro anyway) but would rather he didn't scare himself 5hitless as I'd probably struggle to get him back on!

I was going to say a Chinese pit bike. I brought a cheap second hand one for my 10yr old at Christmas. It’s been brilliant, cost £300 hrs been to mx tracks and round the farm. I’ve just got him a Ktm 85 small wheel as he’s right into it now. The 110cc 4 stroke was perfect for learning on as he could rev it flat out till he got used to the gears. Not like you could with a 2stroke. And you not shovelling our loads of money on something he may not like.

Pw80 generally bomb proof.
Oil, tyre pressure, fuel, chain and away you go.
New piston and rings were £30 + rebore at £15.
Can jack rear suspension up by re drilling shock hole under seat.
Suited 7 to 10. Still pull me ok.

Now progressed to yamaha rt100 twin shock, with clutch, suit 9 to 13 yrs old. Or me.

one of the trials bikes is a good starter bike, they are very low geared and it teaches you balance and handling at low speeds, a gas gas or a sherco.

The Yamaha TY 80 is a awesome starter bike but the classic bike collectors have jumped on them now and one in bits is fetching strong money .Strangely enough i found that kiddies program Kickstart yesterday while on youtube i bet the HSE would have kittens if they tried that now .....
