Killing rats in traps

What are the best methods of killing rats caught in humane traps? I sometimes shoot it in the trap with an air rifle, or let it out and shoot it with a 12 bore, think in the past they used to let them out and let the dogs chase them. None of these are ideal, just wondered what other people do. Don't like the thought of drowning, but what about somehow gassing them with a car exhaust?

Shoot with an air rifle, or empty trap in an old deep (empty) water trough and let dogs finish them. Drowning is against the law now.

As above, it’s illegal to drown vermin apparently rats have rights to.
Like davidroberts30 says “spade, boot, shoot”
Humane traps also have to be checked daily as it’s an offense to leave trapped vermin without food or water.
But who’s going to be checking what You are doing i don’t know

if it’s a problem you’re better off using a kill trap such as a fen trap in a bit of pipe.

Feed it some rat poison in the trap.

Let the rat out directly into a hessian sack, then swing the sack hard against a wall.
