Killing rats in traps

What are the best methods of killing rats caught in humane traps? I sometimes shoot it in the trap with an air rifle, or let it out and shoot it with a 12 bore, think in the past they used to let them out and let the dogs chase them. None of these are ideal, just wondered what other people do. Don't like the thought of drowning, but what about somehow gassing them with a car exhaust?

Here you go (see below). Had to look this one up as I was interested to see the official answer!

Quote from the document: ".....the capture, release or killing of rodents in circumstances that compromised or might compromise their welfare may be open to challenge if the animals needs are not met as far as is reasonable in the circumstances....".

Other than that, I couldn't possibly comment!

As above, it’s illegal to drown vermin apparently rats have rights to.
Like davidroberts30 says “spade, boot, shoot”
Humane traps also have to be checked daily as it’s an offense to leave trapped vermin without food or water.
But who’s going to be checking what You are doing i don’t know:cautious:

Let the rat out directly into a hessian sack, then swing the sack hard against a wall.
