Looking at a used ES 85 200 5 furrow plough. Are they any good/ reliable/ prone to cracking? I don't really understand all the model numbers ES, LD,LB, etc. I do know that it's a 200 hp headstock and I wonder if it will be strong enough. Our old plough is a 240 and has been welded.

I think an ES is hydraulic front furrow and hydraulic variwidth and auto reset. I think they are relatively weak. A mate had one and was always breaking the stub on the turnover ram. Eventually broke the plough wheel and chopped it infor an Ovolac. I have one, it's a very strong plough but quite a weight too.
 
Basically E means auto reset, L means Shear bolt, 85 is the point to point clearance, 200 is the headstock rating in hp, the ED, ES, LD & LS follow this, the anomaly is the EG and the LB, they are the reset/s’bolt version of each other!
The ES is a great plough, the earlier ones were mainly 95 clearance, they had a slight issue of cracking through the alignment ram bracket, when they went to the 85 clearance they doubled the plates on the headstock, I’ve not seen any issues since!

Ref the turnover pin, we do have them go, when they are replaced they have to be torqued to the correct setting which is approx 800 mm, or FT, if they have been left loose, they will continue to give hassle until repaired properly, or you can turn the headstock over and use the hole on the opposite side.
As said, great plough, our best selling and brilliant residual values too!

The turnover ram on my old LB keeps on breaking the stub off. The plough hits the stop and the ram seems to want to keep pushing. I think the valves can sometimes cause problems. I've seen lots of kvs with the headstock end of the ram welded and braced. Kv is popular around here though.
I like having hydraulic vari width. Considering a lemkin otherwise.

Thanks for that. Very informative. Did they make a 300 headstock or just 200.
Seems odd that my 30 yr old plough had a 240 headstock but nearly every one I've seen advertised lately is a 200. Are you confident that the 200 is man enough?
I don't really need an auto reset as our ground isn't too stoney but the one I've seen is an ES. I guess they are a bit dearer and heavier.
 
Ah so the 160 and 240 headstock preceded the 200 and 300’s, the 160 wasnt the greatest, that had tge short horizontal ram on the front of the headstock, was all ok unless the bolts were loose and then they could only be sorted with inserts to keep the ram bracket fixed correctly, the 240 had an issue of breaking the top fixed pin off the headstock, some decent welding and they were normally sorted, but the new headstock came in in the late 90’s from memory. We have had the odd top pin break on a 300 but very rare really, and as I said , there is normall a reason on the 200’s..but it’s metal, and nuts and bolts, they’ll all give trouble now and then eh!
They also don’t need too much oil though the turnover valve!

Lemkin or kv may interest me. I like the no 28 boards on the kv and I don't necessarily need auto reset.
So what's LB and LD refer to?
 
Ok, 28’s are a treat, very easy to pull and firm the furrow well! , LB is Shearbolt, full hyd vari width so it changes the front furrow width too, available in 200 & 300 headstocks, max of a 5 furrow on the 209...the LD is basically a manual width adjustment plough, same thing applies, 200 is max 5 furrow, 300 up to 6.
