komatsu forklift

had it spinning over fast with a good battery spark, doesnt look great, engine is almost firing but not quite and backfiring out the carb a bit, valve train seems fine, its an ordinary household red propane cylinder tried it standing up and horiztonal its a new bottle, forklift is inside my shed so a bit wary of taking gas pipes off but can smell gas of it, there is a retired engineer in my village who will help me with it, first thing he said is compression test, take it from there, only paid £200 for it so not the end of the world if we cant get it started, its a dastun engine think they were common in petrol datsuns and nissans

It needs to be in a Forklift bottle with a dip tube really for liquid gas feed.

Or you can use a normal propane bottle if you have it upside down.

ok didnt know there are special bottles for the forklift, could this be what is stopping it from starting? does the bottle actually have to be upside down dont think its really possible as the bottle is heavy.

ok havent taken a chance on trying the bottle upside down going to get the proper black top gas bottle, £82 for a small bottle seeing as i dont have an empty to exchange! have bought the proper connector for this bottle, planning on putting a 8mm hose tail fitting on this and fixing the exisiting rubber hose on with hose clips is this a good idea or does the lpg need a special hose or metal pipe? there is a device next to the vaporiser that i believe is a gas lockout, tried putting power to this but doesnt click or make any noise, both wires are red, will this be earthed through the body of the unit or should one of these wires go to earth

On Toyota gas forklifts there’s a condenser unit (??? Not sure that’s correct term) but it uses the engine coolant to stop the gas pipe work freezing up when running as the expanding liquid to gas absorbs heat ( like your fridge) this wee thing contains a diaphragm (or 2 ??) If the diaphragm becomes perforated with age the engine runs rough then eventually won’t run at all as the gas unit freezes up and blocks.

sorry for sketchy details, it’s been a while since we ran them. Follow the pipe work and see if there’s a wee unit that gas and coolant pipes pass thru.

i know where this unit is, there is a solenoid attached to it, this clicks when ignition is turned on, it is the unit beside it that is not clicking, the gas goes through one unit and then to the next

And they are kind of circular in shape?

I think they should maybe both click as that would allow the gas to flow. can you swap the wires between them to test?

Also think if you can open them you will find the diaphragms. Disconnect the gas first.

yes circular in shape, this one has no button on it, tried testing with a wire straight to the battery but no clicking, have the proper gas bottle for it now hopefully test it on saturday, have googled for repair kits for these units but cant find any, its pretty old, has anyone ever converted one of these engines back to running on petrol, may be safer and less hassle to get going like that

sorry for the late reply not sure if anyone still following this, got the fork going now, it was two stuck valves in the cylinder head that was the problem, stripped head, cleaned valves, new head gasket, spark plugs, coil and it fired right up for me, steering is a little heavy and tilting the forks forward causes it to strain, tilting back and forks up down is fine, is there a filter in the hydraulic system?

tyres looked a bit soft took them to 50psi what is meant to be in them nothing written on sidewalls, this machine has been lying a long time, hydraulic oil looks ok but would like to do the filters to eliminate them
