As above,I have a 6 year old spreader which is rusting badly in the corners of the hopper and is starting to split

is this common for KRM spreaders or am I unlucky?

I find that it is very bad for being coated in fert dust!! Do other makes suffer from this also as seems like a very short lifespan for my spreader!!

I try to,though perhaps not religiously-it has a lot of nooks and crannys and getting it spotless is very difficult when it has been coated in dust after only a couple of bags.
The annoying thing is that the corners that are rusting badly are easily cleaned!!

I have a 4 year old krm that is rusting badly at same points u say. They are not easy spreaders to clean well. Mine does get a good wash every night after spreading too.

Spreaders benefit greatly from being washed thoroughly, though not necessarily daily if used daily. It makes a massive difference to the durability of the paint if it is primed with a diesel/10%oil spray before use when new and before putting it away every winter. Have a look at my Vicon pictures in the Krone topicin the Pictures section. You would never guess that it is over ten years of age and sometimes not washed for a week after use. There's no rust on it.
Same went for the Sulky before it, that must be the best part of 20 years old now and owned by a neighbour. It was immaculate when I sold it.

we purchased a lely centreliner sx6000. This is very easy to wash off and paint work is brilliant. My previous model lasted from 2001 until i sold it, for the bigger model capable of carrying 3tonnes, in 2017.

Perhaps not every night, but usually after I have used it.
I tried spraying with diesel before using, hoping that it would be easier to clean, but I think that it just made the dust stick even quicker!!

I have a 6 year old krm and rusting badly on corners and few places where bolts go through the hopper, I Wash it every time after use. Disappointed to say the least!

A local contractor has a kv/vicon spreader and does a huge tonnage/year and his 10 years old machine is like new
After a days work it hardly needs washed-seems to spread without creating dust?

Had 2 Krm spreaders. Red a blue ones. Both kept for 10 years and no rust. Washed after use but not every night. 2 or 3 times a season sprayed with 30%clean oil 70%diesel. When its washed I only use a cold power washer, the oil seams to stay on and build up over time. The spreader looked like it needs a good clean but i leave all the oil on to protect it. If you wipe through the oil the paint is like new.

On my second KRM Bogballe and I find paint excellent. BUT it’s pressure washed off after every day (or two days) if an application spreads overnight. Then after 12-24 hours to dry it is sprayed with diesel/hydraulic oil mix. Keeps paint like new. As has been mentioned the coat of oil gives extra protection from fert dust and actually makes washing it off each time easier. Can’t fault the paint on my two KRM’s
