Hi guys

I'm not a farmer but I rent a byre on what was a farm on Cambuslang, Scotland (Crookedshields Farm)l

Anyway. I have a query regarding these ride-on mowers.

The guy who owns the farm bought a 2nd-hand one some time ago and I'm always getting hassled to look at it if it's acting up.

Today I connected jumps leads incorrectly to it (but correctly to the car with the good battery) and now the dashboard on the mower is dead.

What am I most likely to have damaged with the wrong connection? (black jump lead was on the +VE terminal and red jump lead was on the -VE)

The machine doesn't have a lot of electrics but it has a small 'magic-box' of resistors and stuff bolted to the chassis rail. the parts-list shows it also has 3 fuses and a regulator.

I took the magic box off and could't see and burnt of blown components in it.

The cables were only on for a short time and machine wasn't started

Even if it’s only a split second of getting the jump leads crossed the damage is done. I would know about the magic box but the charging system could be toasted along with the regulator. If it has an alternator the diodes will have gone for sure. Pull the fuses and check then one at a time and start looking. What harm can you do now. Lol

There will be a main fuse, probably near the starter motor. Looks like this but probably green

what does acting up boil down too. Won’t start? If the battery is dead I’d be reluctant to connect direct to a car. The power going thru a dead battery won’t give you the same cranking amps as a decent fully charged battery. Start with a good battery.
Well the last issue we had was that the belt which drives the blades wasn't doing its job and I was saying we should get a new belt but he thought it was a better idea to take the machine 40 miles back to the guy he bought it from as he told him the belt has to be changed with the engine running.

I said 'did he mb say the blades need to be engaged with the engine running?' (when you engage the blades a pully wheel moves over and touches the belt which is loose on the crank pulley) but he wasn't happy about me asking that.

This went on for weeks as the seller (understandably) couldn't be arsed with it all and said you can only come on a dry day.

I eventually ordered a new belt, printed of the pages from the manual, and fitted the new belt adjusting the cable etc to what the manual said and it's been working great since apart from difficult to start as the negative lead terminal is cracked

Was a guy called Tony who lives on a road which has same name as two other roads.

We discussed what.3.words as 'our' farm is also on an un-named road as the (free) app is ideal for finding these kinds of places but no-one uses it

How do you mean?

Thought Kubota made Kubota
I think the gr1600 are a castel garden or similar with a Kubota engine and orange paint. The only non Kubota ride on as such. There might some more Kubota bits about them but they are definitely not a full blown commercial Kubota mower like you'd expect.

Just checked my Ebay purchase and yes it was a pair of belts but I don't remember fitting 2.

The mechanism is quite primitive: There is a belt (or mb two) which sit very loosely over two rotating pulleys whilst the engine is running. When you want to cut grass you throw a lever which puts a pressed-steel wheel in contact with the belt(s) and tightens things enough for th drive from the main pulley to turn the other one taking drive to the cutting aparatus
