Cheers Jim

I have been looking a low hr 9960 today, very tidy and with a loader fitted, it would be ideal for my needs, albeit at a price...!

However, when I climbed into the cab and looked around it did seem a bit petite. That suits me as I deliberately do not want a big tractor, BUT, then I sat on the nice air seat and considered the steering wheel... No bloody room for the knees, unless the seat is dropped right down which then means the knees are bent tight. We looked at the possibility that the s wheel would telescope out, but couldn't see how it might be possible. I thgink the cab is pitched at those under 5'8"!!

Do you know if the steering wheel can be done? For me, it's a deal breaker! Although I did wonder this afternoon, if a more dished steering wheel might help.

This review would suggest that the steering column doesn't telescope out. I know on the m9540 it just tilts.Presumably the same on the newer models.

Cheers. I'd found that review last night too ;) TBH, the tractor is in my view, unsuitable for anyone with a leg over 26", as it forces you to hunch over the steering. Back and neck ache would follow...

THe 8560 is the same, so it would seem was the case across the range.... then. I popped into Battlefield Tractors today and asked about the latest versions of teh same model, and although they didn't have one in, the brochures made big mention of the the improved seating position and driver comfort from a tilt and telescopic steering column!!

They listened eventually!!

I've got one.

The only steering wheel adjustment is back and forth.

I'd assume that the seat must have been in a funny position or something as I'm 6ft and never had the problem you're describing?

Yes, unfortunately the 9960/8560 and older models do not have telescopic adjustment of the steering wheel, just back and forth.

You could get some kind of boss made between the steering wheel and flange it bolts to to lift steering wheel up? Relatively small cost if the tractor ticks all the boxes?

Otherwise the M5111/M5091 has this feature!

Well we tried all options!! It's not an option on the build.

I will not have a seat that forces me to bend my knees else I get some problems... Same with my m/bikes! So I have the seat fairly high on all my vehicles. As soon as you do that on the Kubota, the knees are banging on the steering wheel and you are hunched over it as well!

My take is that the newer M models have addressed this! So I have provisionally priced a 75hp new one...:D

Thank you Jim, I wondered on this.

I'll have a word with the seller and see what he says.(y) Just need a good engineer and NOT a fitter;)

Found this site after speaking with the seller about the mod needed.

I then popped down to the local engineering shop who do good work, with the pic I had downloaded and printed to see what they would say about possible options to raise the steering wheel, 50-75mm.

1. New shaft, with splines and threaded end. Big job as very few people do one-off spline cutting now. Probably £500, but a solid well engineered part at the end.

2. Cut the existing shaft in half, and insert a machined extension with the original shaft centre drilled out, and then a lug machined into each end of the extension piece, to locate and fix it in the drilled shaft, then weld and machine the shaft down to fit in the shaft housing tube. £150-200. Possible strength problems, albeit the shaft will have no lateral movement...

3. Machine a boss to fix onto the top of the shaft. The issue here is again, the cost of machining the splines on the boss, to accept the steering wheel. Easiest option in many ways, other than that damned spline again!

Not an easy, or cheap, fix.
