MERGE MAXX 950

Aimed at large-scale grassland farms and contractors, this revolutionary machine uses two adjustable, variable width and bi-directional merger belts to give a maximum grass pick-up width of 9.50 metres in a single pass.

The bi-directional design of the twin belts provides multiple windrow delivery options: forage can be delivered into a single central windrow, a single lateral windrow (left or right side), two lateral windrows (one either side) or a central and left or right lateral windrow. With this degree of versatility, the Merge Maxx can collect up to 18 metres into a single windrow from two passes, or – in light crop situations such as a multi-cut silage system – collect up to 27 metres of grass into one windrow from three passes.

Interactive parts catalogues and operators’ manuals for KUHN machines up to 20 years old can now be accessed through the company’s MyKUHN online customer portal.
Any owner or operator can now obtain essential information for maintenance and repairs, simply by registering a machine’s serial number on the site, even when purchasing used equipment.

“There’s perhaps a tendency to assume services such as MyKUHN apply only to the new machinery buyer,” says KUHN UK managing director Siân Pritchard, “but the facility is arguably even more valuable to those purchasing a used machine. Having instant access to a user-friendly parts catalogue and up to date operator’s manual should give buyers greater confidence and make any ongoing servicing a lot easier and more cost-effective.”

The MyKUHN online customer portal was first launched in the UK in 2018 and is free to access via any PC, smartphone or tablet where there is access to the internet. In addition to 24/7 technical support, the portal improves KUHN’s post-sales customer service by offering a click and collect genuine spare parts service through local dealers. It also provides a wide range of associated advice and guidance and advanced notice on special offers, product improvements, events and new machine launches.

Once registered to use MyKUHN, customers can tailor the type and level of information they receive by customising their own preferences according to their areas of interest. In this way, users will be able to build their own library of content and will only receive information that is of specific relevance to their machinery fleet or applicable to their farming operations.

Testimonial: FC 3115 D - https://www.kuhn.co.uk/uk/case-studies-making-the-cut.html

A new mower conditioner, due for launch at Grassland & Muck 2020, has already proven its worth as a prototype for one busy south Wales contractor, reports Luke James.

0.22C

Reliability and consistent performance in a wide variety of conditions are top of Elgan Bowen’s list of requirements when he chooses a mower conditioner.

He cuts over 809ha (2,000 acres) of grass in a typical season as part of a silage contracting operation that harvests a total of 1,416ha (3,500 acres) around Crymych in Pembrokeshire.

With both dairy and beef farmer customers increasingly aware of the importance of quality forage, Elgan says the pressure to deliver is as high as it’s ever been.

“When it comes to mowing, the priorities are for a clean cut and a well-conditioned swath,” he says, “and we’ll soon hear about it if the job is not done to the required standard.

“Timeliness is also critical, more often than not. Farmers want to harvest the grass at the optimum growth stage or take advantage of good weather windows, so we need to maintain high work rates and avoid any delays that may result from breakdowns.”

Trading as K T and A E Bowen, the contracting business focuses mainly on grass during the summer months, with a five man team covering the entire operation where required, from mowing through to harvesting for clamp, round or square bales. Two mowing outfits are currently used, one being a triple gang, or ‘butterfly’ configuration, and the other a front and rear mounted combination.

The newest machine into the fleet is Kuhn’s FC 3115 D mower conditioner, which has been used as a prototype as part of Elgan’s front and rear mounted combination for two years prior to its official launch in 2020.

This 3.1 metre machine gives an operating width of 6 metres when used with a front mounted unit and includes all the latest cutter bar technologies and drive line engineering to ensure the efficiency and reliability required by the busiest contracting business. It is also vertically folding, which adds the significant beneficial features of compact transport, great manoeuvrability and reduced loading on the tractor’s rear wheels.

“One of the challenges we can face as contractors is access to fields, particularly getting in through narrow gateways, so in addition to the operation of the mower itself, we have to think about transport and manoeuvrability,” Elgan adds. “The vertically folding feature on this mower conditioner gives it added value when it comes to tight gateways and narrow lanes. But that’s only relevant if the machine is reliable and produces the required level of performance in the field.

Kuhn builds its top of the range mower conditioners with both large scale livestock farmers and busy contractors in mind. They include a number of key features designed to deliver the combination of performance and reliability that are so vital when forage quality is on the line.

LIFT-CONTROL suspension is an exclusive feature on Kuhn mowers and mower conditioners and is key to the FC 3115 D’s in-field performance. In conjunction with powerful and constant pressure control, this technology allows precise ground following to ensure a clean cut and minimal soil contamination of the forage. This also provides an effective safety mechanism, whereby the machine moves backwards and upwards if hitting an obstacle, before moving swiftly back into work. This minimises damage, whilst maintaining efficiency of work.

The FC 3115 D also features Kuhn’s patented OptiDisc cutter bar, which has an asymmetric disc design that combines a quality cutting performance with high crop flow characteristics that help maintain efficiency of operation whatever the conditions. OptiDisc also includes features such as large diameter gear wheels and Kuhn’s Protectadrive safety within the disc bearing housings. This ensures the machine is robust in work with minimal maintenance requirements.

Replacing wearing components is an inevitable part of any contractor’s routine and, with mowers and mower conditioners, that first and foremost means the blades.

On the FC 3115 D, Kuhn’s Fast-Fit system is a standard feature, which Elgan sees as a major advantage.

“Maintaining a good set of blades on the mower is critical to its performance,” he says, “so the ability to change them with a simple lever as opposed to using spanners to loosen and tighten nuts and bolts will save us hours and hours over a season.”

The conditioning unit on the FC 3115 D is a heavy duty pivoting steel finger system. Conditioning intensity is easily adjustable by switching between two rotor speeds and/or setting the conditioning hood in one of five positions.

“It’s important to be able to set the conditioner according to crop conditions or customer requirements,” concludes Elgan. “Again, if this is a quick and simple operation, it saves time and allows us to get on and do the job more efficiently.”

LAUNCHING THE *NEW* HIGH DENSITY SQUARE BALERS - SB SERIES

1589979565880.png

New to the market for 2020 is KUHN’s SB large square baler range offering increased capacity and higher density baling.

Including the SB 890 (80 x 90cm bale size), the SB 1270X (120 x 70cm), the SB 1290 (120 x 90cm), and the extreme density SB 1290iD (120 x 90cm), the SB balers have been developed with an improved crop intake system compared with earlier models. A new crop guard design, combined with increased torque on the rotor and feeder fork driveline, gives these models up to 15% higher intake capacity and greater endurance.

The torque regulation system monitors pressure on the driveline, including the crank angle position sensor and plunger rod load pins. Picking up different pressures in the plunger cycle, the operator is guided to feed extra material into one side of the machine to achieve higher bale weights that lead to increased handling and transport efficiencies.

MOWING REGIME KEY TO SAFETY OF AIR TRAVEL

airport 4.jpg

Within the broad spectrum of activities that can be described as groundcare services, airfield maintenance must rank amongst the more demanding for contractors.
It’s not only the restrictive working hours that apply, or the necessary scrutiny of staff records to ensure adequate airside security, but there are also Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) rules to adhere to determining such details as the precise cutting height of the grass.

Undaunted by such challenges, Aberdeenshire contractor Roy Cowie LBS Ltd successfully tendered for the work at the 256 acre site of Aberdeen International Airport, at Dyce, winning the contract ahead of both national and international competition.

“We offer truly localised services, with everything carried out by our own staff and with our own equipment,” explains Cam Paterson, who – having been with the business for 22 years – typifies the company’s impressive staff retention record. “We were delighted to secure this contract and have been very happy working with the specifications required for this job.”

Although tree surgery in the surrounding areas and some drainage work has already seen the role expand, the primary operation at the airport is to maintain the large areas of grass surrounding the runways and access roads. For this, Roy Cowie not only needed suitable mowing capacity, but also some specialist modifications to the equipment to deliver precisely the right results. The company turned to another local firm, agricultural, groundcare and construction machinery dealer Ravenhill, to provide the support, as Cam Paterson explains.

“We looked at the specification for the job and recognised the importance of having the right combination of machines with the correct attributes,” he says. “Ravenhill were able to supply all the equipment, adapt it to what we needed, and provide the security of spares and servicing that are so important for time-critical operations such as this.”

airport 2.png
airport 3.jpg
airport 1.jpg

The fleet used for the airport maintenance contract includes a New Holland T6 180 tractor with front-mounted Kuhn BPR 305 flail mower and a rear-mounted Kuhn Spring Longer flail mower. A second smaller tractor (New Holland T5 120) runs with a second BPR 305 flail mower. Both tractors have been fitted with large flotation tyres and are relatively light in weight, to minimise the risk of rutting, and have LED lights to facilitate night working. In addition, the flail mowers have been adapted to deliver the specific cutting height required for airport maintenance.

“Under CAA requirements, airports operate something called a ‘Long Grass Policy’, which means the grass needs to be maintained within a specified height range,” adds Cam. “By growing specific fescue grasses and maintaining the grass at this height, the aim is to deter birds, to mitigate against the risk of bird strike, and it is a critical part of what we do. We’ve therefore had the mowers adapted by Ravenhill, to allow us to maintain the grass at between 225mm and 275mm. We’re cutting five or six times during the growing season to maintain the grass at the optimum height.”

It’s also important to avoid the build up of any dead grass, that might create a thatch that could harbour insects and encourage birds. Some airports practice something called ‘bottoming out’ at the start of the growing season, but Cam and his team have found periodic Raking to be a more effective solution.

“Overall, we feel we have the right equipment combinations to deliver the best results, concludes Cam. “Front-mounting of the flail mowers is important, so we are never driving on un-cut grass, and we have the Spring-Longer mounted to the right, to give us the best access to all parts of this particular site. The flails make an immaculate job and allow us to create an aesthetically pleasing striped effect, which has even attracted compliments from pilots who say it makes Aberdeen a distinctive location.”

11.9.18CLEANSTRAW.jpg

The CLEANSTRAW system comprises of a 64-litre water tank and three misting nozzles mounted at the exit of the straw blowing chute. The nozzles are fed by a 12v/15amp pump which provides water at a flow rate of 1.8l/min, enough to treat 12 to 18 bales of straw at a rate of 1 litre of water per 100kg of straw.

Applying a mist of water at this rate and in this way eliminates excessive levels of airborne dust by reducing the amount of time that these particles remain suspended in the air: trials have shown that the air in a typical livestock building will be dust-free within 30 seconds after straw-blowing with the CLEANSTRAW system has ceased, compared to several minutes under normal conditions.

“Reducing the amount of dust in livestock buildings has a number of advantages,” explains KUHN Product Specialist, Katie Calcutt. “It not only creates a cleaner, more comfortable and more productive environment for cattle, but also for farm workers who will be less susceptible to inhaling dust particles and other impurities which may be present in the straw.”

The CLEANSTRAW system is available for all KUHN straw bedders and mixer wagons equipped with a blowing turbine. These include the POLYDRIVE equipped range of PRIMOR straw bedders and feeders and the PROFILE PLUS range of mixer wagons with straw bedding capabilities.

The CLEANSTRAW’s nozzles and pump components are protected against blockages by a suction filter system, and all the system’s components sit within the original footprint of the machine to which they are mounted. The water tank is equipped with a drain valve for cleaning and maintenance and is transparent to make it easy to check the water level at a glance. A pressure gauge and manually operated thumbwheel are used to adjust tank pressure and water flow.

The system is automatically activated when the POLYDRIVE system is engaged and can also be armed or disabled via an in-cab switch: this enables users of a combination straw bedding and feeding wagon to turn the system on when blowing straw for bedding, or off when dispensing feed.

“Adding a fine mist of water as straw exits the spreading chute means very little water is required,” Katie adds. “This not only preserves the straw’s absorbency potential, ensuring it remains an effective and hygienic bedding material, but also means the straw bedder’s maximum working capacity remains unaffected.”

BREATH EASIER WITH CLEAN AIR
Luke James speaks to vet Dan Humphries about the modern-day issue of dust from straw bedding machines and looks at an alternative approach to solving the problem.

Dan Humphries.jpg

When bales were small and stored in dry barns, and bedding was spread with a pitch fork, dust wasn’t such a big issue in cattle sheds.
Now that’s changed, and most straw is in round or big square bales, often stored outside, potentially contaminated, and is increasingly chopped through a spinning turbine and blown into sheds from above.
Modern methods save time and labour, and may use less straw, but the downside is the risk of airborne particles – something that can impact on the health of cattle and anyone working in that environment.
“We see a lot of problems resulting from poor air quality in cattle sheds, and dust can certainly be a factor,” says Dan Humphries of the specialist dairy veterinary consultancy Dairy Insight. “There’s obviously the challenge to respiratory health, but dust can also be a cause of eye problems, with runny eyes attracting flies and leading to conditions such as New Forest Eye. We should also consider how working in a dust-filled environment can affect human health, with conditions such as Farmers’ Lung a possible consequence.”
When it comes to lung health in cattle, it’s hard to under estimate the importance of clean air, and understanding some basic physiology certainly helps to drive the point home.
“Cattle are at a disadvantage from day one when it comes to their lungs, as they have less than half the respiratory capacity of any other mammal of comparable size,” explains Dan. “It’s also important to appreciate that lung damage tends to be permanent, so any impairment created in young calves, for example, is a problem for life.”
primor-with-cleanstraw.jpg

Dust is likely to contain pollen, moulds, bacteria and tiny fragments of plant residue. When cattle are exposed to a lot of it, their defense mechanisms can be over powered. The mucus and fine hairs in their trachea and bronchi – which are there to intercept foreign particles – can become ineffective and the animal’s immune system becomes compromised. This increases the likelihood of bacterial infections, and the damaging result can be pneumonia.
Dan adds: “I’ve seen situations where avoiding exposure to dust has been the key factor in preventing pneumonia in calves, so it is a very real risk and something that can have a life-long impact on animal performance.”

Minimising the impact of dust
Dust extraction - as is the norm in bedding and feeds for performance horses for example - is unrealistic on a livestock farm, but a good starting point will be to avoid using straw that is contaminated with moulds or soil.
Another recommendation is to remove cattle from sheds when bedding machines are operating. This is something that could be worked into some farms’ routines, but may not always be practical or possible.
One company with an alternative solution is Kuhn Farm Machinery, who now offer a dust control system within their straw bedding equipment range.
Available on new equipment, or as a retrofit upgrade for existing machines, the Cleanstraw facility reduces dust in livestock buildings by applying a fine mist of water to straw as it is distributed. It comprises a 64 litre water tank and three misting nozzles mounted at the exit of the straw blowing chute. The nozzles are fed by a pump, which provides water at a flow rate sufficient to apply one litre of water per 100kg of straw, without slowing the machine’s normal performance.
Applying a mist of water at this rate and in this way eliminates excessive levels of airborne dust by reducing the amount of time that these particles remain suspended in the air. Trials have shown that the air in a typical livestock building will be dust-free within 30 seconds after straw-blowing with the Cleanstraw system has ceased. This compares to several minutes under normal conditions.
Kuhn product specialist Katie Calcutt explains: “Reducing the amount of dust in livestock buildings has a number of advantages. It not only creates a cleaner, more comfortable and more productive environment for cattle, but is also far better for farm workers who will be less susceptible to inhaling dust particles and other impurities which may be present in the straw.
“Adding a fine mist of water as straw exits the spreading chute means very little water is required. This not only preserves the straw’s absorbency potential, ensuring it remains an effective and hygienic bedding material, but also means the speed of operation is unaffected.”
The Cleanstraw system is available on Kuhn’s Primor straw bedders that operate with the Polydrive hydraulically disengageable belt system that drives the feed rotor, and on the Profile Plus range of mixer wagons that have a bedding capability. The system is automatically activated when the Polydrive is engaged and can also be armed or disabled via an in-cab switch.
