Kuhn merger 950

Good evening,

Wanting peoples advise/thoughts. We’ve had the Kuhn Merger 950 for a season and a half now. Got a few problems but the main one is the edge of the pick up reel dragging on heavy tedded first cut grass which causes lumps, belt blockages and a lot of ball ache! (and it doesn’t matter what speed the pick up reels going, ground speed or bed speed just one of though annoying things with pick up reels in general) We are thinking of engineering an acrobat wheel on each end to take the grass away from the edge of the pick up, anyone else had this problem and over come it? Any advise would be appreciated.

Get yourself one of the European engineered brands of belt merger. Kuhn customer support is pathetic at least here in the states, and their machine is not capable of handling wet heavy silage crops.

We fought same issues as you and switched to Oxbo/ Ploeger machine and is a joy to operate.

The acrobat wheels may help somewhat, actually not a bad idea really, I'm just saying that other brands are a bit more refined than Kuhn.
Sorry can't help you much more than that

Here in South Africa the local contractor has a ROC merger and they have the same problem. I might give him the idea of adding rake wheels on each side. I know it is a big problem in heavy crops especially the belts that block

Yeah that’s it. The merger itself need a lot of refining, had about 4 new seals in the gearbox, one pick up reel spins as soon as you turn the PTO and the main bed rams are man enough in my opinion in steep ground I’ve had them not lift when facing down hill or if you are on the side of a hill the lower side will lift but the top side struggles plus Kuhn aren’t good to deal with. Other than that the concept of a merger and the versatility of the machine is brilliant. We do have a lot of stoney ground yes so the merger comes into it own also wear on the forager and smoother swaths means less stress on the machine in general. We averaged 10 acres an hour in heavy first cut, now we’re averaging 11/12

Kuhn are useless here too! Trouble is the Oxbo isn’t as versatile is it? As the beds on the Kuhn move in and out for central discharge or side discharge whereas I believe the oxbo you have to put the centre bit in yourself? Is that correct? We are going to give the acrobat wheel a go, can’t be any worse! Haha

I saw one working on youtube and thought the same thing with the lumps wrapping on the far end. I thought to myself, a driven torpedo standing up vertically should sort that.
Just a thought, never worked with one, or even seen one working in the flesh.

The trouble with a merger after following one a few times this season is if there is a lump it just picks it up and moves it, with a rotor it kind of smooths it out if that makes sense?

Correct to a point. The oxbo isn't designed to make a center swath like a kuhn , it does however have 3 separate reels and belts that can be ran right or left discharge depending on the situation. We are running a 2340 model and heavy silage crops are a breeze. Best of luck whatever you try with your kuhn, we had 2of them so I know your frustration

All the same, doesn’t matter how the pickup reel is designed if they find a lump they will just move the lump but different than a baler because the baler is eating it, your just moving it into more grass to cause a bigger lump. Generally if it’s wet grass they won’t entertain it without making a big mess. They advertise they don’t lift stones but all they infact do is windrow them to the ends of the field to make sure there’s something decent to get with the mower the next time round rather than a few spread out you can roll down.
