A lot to like about this variety but is the royalty the same as with Wolverine where there is a second royalty payment which is probably more expensive than applying an insecticide if one wanted to?

No is the short answer it would seem. It is not part of the RAC / BIPO scheme. http://www.bipo.org.uk/royalty-rates/ I don't think any KWS varieties are.
I think there were plenty of other problems with Wolverine other than just the separate royalty. Not least the fact that the breeder recommended spraying it for aphids anyway.

I understand that there is a higher royalty to pay and I know that the BSPB will contact growers to register/explain how it will work but I don't know any more yet. Could be off-putting.

Plenty of other problems with KWS, whose spokespeople always seem to come up with a disarming "not me guv" when one of its hits the fan.

Indeed, it would seem that Extase certainly had some fairly major issues for some people last year. We were going to have some but decided against it and will wait and see.
I wasn't particularly promoting KWS just pointing out that none of their varieties appear to be on the list for the enhanced royalty scheme (yet)
