I do believe @Grass And Grain is like myself and has an inbuilt hate for the makework gearbox fitted to vehicles designed in the last century!

after all does anyone still make cars with manual gears?
Cheapest option is probably to keep the defender. They seem to be appreciating. Nothing at all wrong with it mechanically, but at 6'4" I just don't fit in it, and as you suggest, I much prefer an auto.

Just a matter of deciding on which badge of pickup.

I do like rangers.

If you can tolerate the dealers Ford Ranger is one of the best imo

6’4” and not wanting a Defender I understand, although you can get some decent seat conversions these days - kudos if you’ve done 80k miles without that.

As for gears, I still associate slushboxes with OAPs and fat Americans. With a decent torque engine, it’s not that many times you change anyway.

Auto gearbox is the smart choice nowadays

My dad did the 80k. He's not getting any younger, so if i end up doing the next 80k, then I was wanting a bit more comfort.

Will be a shame to aee defender go. Been a land rover here since the 1970s.

I had an l200about 10 years ago, good pickup pulled float nae bother. Then went to Isuzu d/max 2.5, had it for 8 years same as above re-trailer. Now have a Hilux invincible, good pickup too. Only complaint I've got is seating/steering position, to get the seat to where I like it my knees hit wheel so have to sit down lower than I'd like. Could do with wheel being able to go up 3 inches Hilux is first auto box I've had, great for reversing trailer but can't decide if I like it!! Seem to be pretty indecisive at times. Out of them all I've had all return 22-25mpg but I tend to drive it lik I've stole it:whistle: and also belive anything that can pull 3-3.5 tons is never gonna be economical??
