Move into the 21st century.
Agri undervalues labour so much, and then moans about not being able to attract or keep people. You’ve just got to read threads on here and Facebook regarding lambing labour etc to see the attitude of people

That’s why we buy machines, job won’t stand lots of paid labour. Machines don’t want holidays, paternity, maternity, sick pay, days off. Then folk moan there’s no work in agriculture! We’ve been pushed down the mechanisation route since the war!!

Plus if a machine goes wrong I can give it a good kicking and not face an assault charge!

If people employed in Ag want that sort of pay then Joe and Jo Public better start paying a hell of a lot more for our produce... and the Supermarkets and processors will need to pass the money down the chain!

This is when the headline prices by the pedigree men at Lanark etc really bite us. The public only hear about the six figure stock and think we are all on mega money for stock!

No undervaluing of labour there. I was making it clear in my own unique style that I wanted a professional and experienced contractor with trained dogs, rather than someone who's watched lambing live and fancies a go.
Such contractors were invited to pm me with their rates. I put the onus on them to value their labour.
I thought the post was perfect to be fair… I wish I’d put a similar post last year when I hired my lambing staff… she got a sharp awakening from what she’s seen as lambing on Instagram that’s for sure

Hang on ...... isn’t this one isolated short term contract working in a warehouse doing crap repetitive sh!t.
If £26 an hour becomes the standard wage for any basic jobs there are a lot more industry’s ahead of ag that are going to sh*t themselves.

I've often said I love the lifestyle that farming gives me, even when the weather's at its worst, but if it was £26 an hour long term it might not matter how crap and repetitive it was ...

This last 12 months there have been many occasions I have thought “I’d be better selling all the sheep and cattle, and take these short term jobs at brilliant money until they run out.” Unfortunately it’s not just a job you can jump in and out of!
