I think the government had two motives, firstly to save face internationally and secondly to prevent financial transactions and savings from going underground thus defying the push towards a cashless society. The bankers behind the collapse got off very lightly with ill gotten bonuses intact. They were undoubtedly criminals and should have faced trial as individuals complicit in what was clearly reckless disregard for fair practice.

Or folk would spend it locally, employed people by spending it and endless other options. Some might piddle it up the wall and have some nice holidays......... however the feelgood factor would far outweigh "austerity". ;)
I have some sympathy for what you are saying and the feelgood factor is worth a mint but the other side of the coin sees a wrecked financial platform in which people would have no confidence for generations. Did you have deposits in the discredited and failed banks?

Have to say Leo Vadkar is a total puppet and even looks like one, he thinks he is a statesman when actually he’s being very naive and creating tensions for the sake of his ego. Why oh why do Europe so hate democracy that doesn’t go in their favour.

What ..... you expect him or ANY other ROI leader to accept a border?

No, I expect him to live up to obligations the Irish State signed up to in 1998 under the Belfast Agreement, which implicitly recognised that NI was part of the United Kingdom. Thus a border already exists.

Tut, tut. You know I mean and he means and everybody with a modicum of sense we will not accept a hard border. And you know what if that means digging in, so be it.

But why, Ireland isn't leaving? Much better that NI becomes an independent country with it's own rights of self determination rather than being a football in a power politics game.
That seems to be the answer surely. Not that i know much of Ireland and their history. The Unionists would probably sh!t themselves.

An independent Northern Ireland? You are having a laugh aren't you? Northern Ireland politicians haven't the maturity to run a devolved assembly never mind make real decisions.

I agree but ..

Financially it's also not feasible and would require the rest of the UK to guarantee existing trade and financial benefits and the ability to use the £.

Perhaps they need to ask the NI population, hard border or become part of a united ireland and go with the decision
