hi making a thread for this because it could be important and our digger will be leaving any day!! Does anyone know what angle the sides need to be? Got told 45 degree angle sides aren’t being passed by engineers and a guy planning lagoons has had to change his plans from 45 degree to 33 degree sides. It’s not a sepa issue it’s the planning side and getting an engineer to sign it off. Thanks for any help

Used Asher associates for ours, from memory they don’t want it steep at all.

One gave way over Stranraer way I think a few years ago which maybe made them nervous. Different from a silage clamp which does not have the same sideways pressure

I know the chap, he said there was a big boulder in the wall which made a weak point in the wall. One side of the lagoon been made up while the other was dug into the hill. The lagoon was full when it let go.

Mine had to be 1 in 2 . Standard reservoir build. Also in case someone falls in they can walk out, supposedly. If you go for proper planning you will have to get a proper structural design anyway. Costs an arm and a leg but without it you are not insured and may be forced to fill it in should you get caught. A big one near me was refused retrospective planning consent.

Do you not need an engineer to sign it off? Surely he will look at the ground conditions and give you a design to build it to?
Einvorment Agency have to be given a set period to check an earth bank/clay lined Lagoon. (Think it's around 2 weeks before use after completion)

I did a 50m by 50m lagoon 7 years ago and didn't use an engineer. Just drew plans on graph paper and submitted to planners. Used a 1 in 1 slope but in hindsight should have gone shallower. I imported 3000 tonnes of clay to line it with as we were short on site. Hired a wackier plate attachment for contractors 360 to seal the banks. Would have been easier to do if shallower and maybe could have tracked it down.

Sepa need an engineer to sign it off correct. That’s the problem an anonymous source told me not a single engineer in Scotland was signing off 45 degree angle sides. Yes we had a planner but our digger driver never got the plans !! 3 words.. TOO MANY BOSSES.
