Remember, when storing in a lagoon, you run the risk of losing a high % of the N through evaporation.

In other Countries this is no longer acceptable to store slurries in a open top tank (or lagoon) because of this.

In some cases the N offset v chemical fertilizer is part of the project feasibility, this is compromised if a lagoon is used for storage.

Agreed, this is starting to creep in with the EA and storage under deployment. It seems to be getting a lot tighter to spread wastes and the focus is on N availability.

The reason lagoon's are used for storage is because the cap-x of a covered tank can spoil the IRR and feasibility of the project, as a lagoon is usually much less cost.

However, you cannot have the bread buttered on both sides by using the N value offset of digestate that is stored in a lagoon in the feasibility. This is a tough discussion as it all relates to lagoon capacity, ambient and process temperature.

In addition as pointed out by 360, the EA are looking carefully at all emissions from an AD plant, and what classification they come under.

As an example, let us assume a plant digesting waste must comply with EA and EU Waste Regulations and PAS110 and is pasteurising at the end of the process. Therefore, this may determine ANY emissions before pasteurisation are still classed as waste and should be managed as such. This includes any hot vented or exhaust's including air that may have been pre-heated for drying.

Further more, if we calculate the emissions from all slurry stores and tanks together, then take action by covering them all, this would assist in dramatically reducing the overall emissions for agriculture.

Covered lagoon ??

Bag tanks ??

Edit: Should have added, it is not very environmentally friendly to evaporate Nitrogen into the atmosphere.
