When HRMC Took vat off tampons they upped the price so perhaps they using the leg s of nz lamb as loss leaders lol
When NZ lamb has been at record prices all of last season ( a lot more than what the UK was at recently) then they would have lost money buying it on farm in NZ without all of the other costs...

Its about carcass balance, the demand for joints and steaks has fallen so they are mincing the more valuable parts. Butchers are busy because consumers can't get what they want in the supermarkets, their demand will fall when the supply chain stabilises. It's not a shortage of beef and lamb its a distribution problem.

I keep hearing prices are falling and local butchers can’t keep up with demand. So are prices falling in the shops?

A couple of main reasons :

The government has allowed the supermarket buyers to buy food as a cartel, rather than individually as before.....so it was easy for them to drop lamb price instantly.

Some milk buyers only purchased for the catering industry, which all but stopped over night.

Exports have slowed down or stopped to some Countries, so we have excess meat of some cuts.

Finally we have been shafted again while the consumer are led to believe there is a shortage as the supermarket shelfs are empty !!
