Lamb killing weather

A lot of it is where you are as even if the mills in the south are keeping pace easily enough they aren't going to run lorries to Scotland or the north even if they have another mill up there that can't keep up as I dare say demand in the north is going to be a lot higher this year because of the weather if the animals are being either kept in longer, treading in the grass or like ourselves here are going through what grass has grown. It might not be as wet here as in other parts but it is still way to wet to get the fertiliser out which we usually get done early March hopefully it will dry up enough that we can otherwise we'll end up having to feed them all again.

Getn cake up here is about 5 days wait, paying for it is the problem, that's been 5days of cold easterly winds and poured of rain last night, so ground saturated again, my ewes are so slow only two today, so that's a blessing. I'm defo not starting lambing till mid April next year,if there is a next year, outside lambs must be perishing in this cold winds, l would be frightened to go near them in the morning's. Just going round picking up the dead ones.

I know that I’ve been relatively lucky with how my ewes are condition wise and lamb losses due to weather.
To put things into perspective, 2 farms within 30 miles of here have lost at least 150 ewes each. One has found just over 100 corpses now that snow is receding.
My heart goes out to those 2 guys and other farmers/shepherds that fund themselves in that situation.

Picked up a month old lamb for dead yesterday but it was just alive, warmed him up and tubes it with warm water with a bit of treacle in it. By evening he was stood up and drank about a litre of water out of a bowl. Took him back out this morning and caught it’s mum and she has very chapped tears so guess it wasn’t letting the lamb suck. Will get them in later and sort it out, picked up two more dead lambs in another field though.
It’s dry so far today but the fields are a sea of mud no wonder they are struggling

My Mrs ( who is far more patient than me)
Did similar but put a drop of lifeaid in a bottle of warm water and tubes a cold half dead lamb
Popped it in a warming box and the wee things up and away

Had a count, we reckon that weather killed over 150 lambs on one block. Never had anything like it. Interesting to note that only about two of those were out of home bred charmoise rams. Will be moving to almost all charmoise next year, but all home bred. Used about 15 tups we mostly bred this year (a few also bred by a member on here!), and so far can’t fault them!

Yes, weather still not good here either, one good day, Saturday, then back to cold winds and hail showers, lambs all sheltering behind rushes, they maybe an eyesore but they are great shelter . Away to see a gimmer how has put water bag out threw tiny prolapse. She will be in grayshills lorry on Monday. God when will these problems ever end.
