Lambing 2019

Thinking of all who are out seeing to lambing now the weather has changed.

The last one home here is overdue by at least 4 days, and not in any hurry by the looks of her.

Personally I hate harnesses (strangled too many lambs when I've not been there). Never lost a lamb when they lamb past a spoon....

My sincere apologies for taking longer than a minute......., but I threw the last of those horrible, irritating spoons on the fire about 15 years ago and certainly haven’t regretted it. I only recall ever losing one lamb tangled in a harness, which I obviously turned round and kicked my arse for.
Harnesses only for me, along with Metacam & AB when I put the prolapse in of course, and maybe a stitch or two as a last resort if they repeatedly recur post-lambing.

ROPE? Has the lamb price gone to your head man? What’s wrong with baler twine?

I must confess to extravagant spending myself though. We have a local manufacturer that makes up very effective harnesses at a very affordable price. In fact, they’re almost cheap enough to think about replacing the handful bought at various farm sales twenty odd years ago.....but then the knots holding them together haven’t broken yet.

Go on then, I'll ask the silly question so my fellow thickos can all learn something today, when you use just a spoon, do you tie it to the wool or what?
TBH spoons here get used only in conjunction with a harness for really committed expellers. They "usually" push out lambs and spoon without much problem, if you happen to not be there.

Tie to the wool and tie the middle hole upwards so they can pee.

Had a ewe prolapse about the size of a turnip last Sunday, and tied her up with string (Hessian string is just the right length). She lambed last night ok n didn't push the prolapse out once.

I'll always tie string first, n spoon as a last resort

I use a version of this, have always found it good enough, the oul boy showed me years ago. He doesn't tie it round the belly but ties it to the wool instead and puts the loop below the tail. TBF there is probably 100 different ways to do it.

I seem to be having a bad run of abortions. Lambing is due to start today but over the last 3 days I have pulled full term dead lambs from 3 ewes and 2 of the ewes have died. They are vaccinated for toxo but not enzo , any suggestions what this could be . I hope it stops soon or this could end up a very stressful and expensive lambing.

@daithi Is it practical to have a pm done in a vet lab. (Take any cleansing as well as lambs.) That should give you an answer. Best wishes.

I took a few lambs into the vets this morning, they have taken swabs , fluids and some of the cleanings and sent to the lab
I will just have to wait to hear what the results are.

Lambing 2019 kicked off here yesterday.

Big lambs seem cope ok out as mild ,just so wet and windy now.

I am experimenting with lambing my twinning ewes beside the sheep yards and Harding each ewe with her lambs as soon as she lambs. Working so far with about 16 lambed and only 4 losses. Still over 200 ewes to go, but the 15th is the due date so it should be getting busy from now on.
