I thought id keep the tradition and post a thread for lambing 2019. So we can all post our good and bad of lambing, some pics would be a good, ill be lambing 700 ewes this year, across two farms, 50 pedigree blue texel ewes, 300 pedigree Llyens, 150 Welsh mules to texel tup, and 200 texel crosses to lleyen tup starting next week.so now I’m rushing around trying to get everything ready. Along with trying to get as much sleep as I can. What does every one else have left to do before they start to lamb. I will send some pics of the first lambs. As they come. good luck to every one.

And to post the first bad as Walking the twin mules yesterday which are currently finishing up the stubble turinps before crutching and housing in a tunnel on the weekend due to lamb 5 March. I find a good ewe laying in the plough line birds pecked her eyes out. Arghhhh feckin birds. Or should I say sheep

I had my first dead ewe of the year today too on stubble turnips, not stuck anywhere, middle of the field shredded to bits, 3yo ewe of a certain breed I’m not trialling again and funnily enough they seem to be killing them selves off quicker than any other breed and they are only 7-8% of our flock.

Started lambing 5 weeks ago, slow going so far with only 40 odd out in the fields(n)

Lost my first ewe today as well. She had been a bit of poorly for a week or two. Seemed to go all stiff and couldn’t get up or walk about very well and wouldn’t eat much. Tried a few treatments but she decided death was the only cure.
Due to start lambing on the 13th March

One thing I think I have learned so far this year If you look at a ewe in the field and think she’s not right don’t wait. Get her in there and then give her a bit of love and care. The ewe I had found had gotten cast and had lost her right eye to the birds. Brought her In pen and strep and a la in a couple of days a bucket of grub, nice bed and roof over her head, besides her Right eye she is now doing fine. Run her with the flock untill she raises her lambs and then hope she might make it to kebab.

I’ve got 4/5 here with an eye missing, 2 are triplet carrying ewes. Never have a problem with 1 eye ewes. Have had a few cast ewes a few days before lambing lost both eyes in previous years, when they lamb, bring them in for a week so the lambs learn to follow her and they are good until weaning. Never much problem when bringing them in either as they tend to know to run in the middle of the group.

This will be the 2nd mule ment to cull the one last year but wasn’t worth the trip for the one she has now scanned a twin and haven’t a problem this year

Got the twins in today. Pleased with there backs after rape and stubble turnips, post scanning. Not a lot left so got them in for 3weeks of feed before they lamb. Turn the singles to the turnips to clean up and help them out the last 3 weeks before housing them. Before the madness starts with this bunch

Been lambing here for about a week or 10 days now. It's started very s...l...o...w...l...y :facepalm:
Probably due to a combination of the hot weather/lack of grass/no teasers at tupping.

Only 3 commercials lambed so far but the Lincolns are making a bit better start.........

On the downside a commercial ewe got rid of a premature set of triplets last night and another twin bearing ewe has that 'smell' about her:( Seems to be par for the course nowadays for us to kick off with a couple of abortions:banghead:

Ah well, like they say, "Bad start, good finish" - fingers crossed

seeing That pen In The background reminded me that I had planned to make some kind of watering system to save on labour. How does everyone water in individual pens ?

I’ve been thinking of making a pipe with holes in it and run it throu pens. I’ve seen one somewhere before but not sure to plumb a float to a level amount of water or to run a recirculating flow with pump . Would like to know pros and cons or if some one has done it if the would do anything different to improve

We coming to end of lambing now, 11 left to go. Exactly same, started with two abortions then a ringwomb! Apart from one mental ewe rejecting despite ever attempt (She in mutton paddock now) its gone well. Start lambing second lot April 9th.......outside lambing hopefully!

Any sheep or lambing work for a new person wanting experience.
Have some dairy experience. Really wanting to get into farming and find the right foothold in?

Around Birmingham? 32 yr old family man. Not a time waster.
