Been talking to someone today that couldn’t believe how little individual pens we have we have 12.7 pens per 100 ewes what do others have. This is for feb lambing mule/texel x ewes

About 20 per 100 here and on the busiest days of the first 17 day cycle it's barely enough.
They normally stay in a pen for 2 days but you always get a few problems (poor mothers, the odd weak lamb, fostered lambs, etc), that have to stay in longer, that mucks the system up.

That means that a pen that's had the same ewe in for more than 2 days needs a bit longer to dry out before it gets used again.

I don't like using them straight away without giving the lime a bit of time to work as I think you're in danger of increasing the incidence of slavery mouth, joint ill, etc.

I had about 50 pens for 300 this year and it wasn’t enough really I turned some sheep out that shouldn’t of been turned out and 2 days later was penning them again but 80% did all lamb in about 6-7 days… also doesn’t help they’re all still inside now apart from 30 😩 got a handful that have been in pens for 10 days or more with various problems too which cocks things up if they’re in there early on o 🤦‍♂️

Currently have 19 pens for the 400 ewes that are lambing now. It’ll be busy next week and it’ll be carnage I’ll have to build some in the big pens as we go

10 per 100 for feb lambers, so about 44 pens/ 440 ewes.
30 of the pens have drinkers to ease the work load.

Early flock is teasered, so about feb 10th it gets bit full on, ok if ewes & lambs go out at a day old, if not, there's temporary pens everywhere..... commandeered all the rappa 7ft hurdles for lambing pens this year, turning out started well, then the weather turned 🤨

If the weather is kind and they can go out soon we get away with about 8 /100 but weather like it is and they're in for a few days and we're tearing round trying to remember where all the hurdles are. One pen of 20 has 7 pens at the moment

I think the answer to the OP is, that no matter how many pens you have, circumstances will always conspire to mean that you never have enough :banghead:

Start off with 12 pens for about 100 ewes end up with as many pens I can make out of anything I can find.
Bad weather turns the whole shed into a big pen and I end up muttering (every year) that I should have built a bigger shed.

Mental arithmetic circuits aren't firing well this morning! Had to change my vote

Generally around 20/100. There's always good reason for some to stay in for more than a day, including extra supervision for twinned on singles. Teased flock, lambing for about 3 weeks.

Every year is different. This year, peak has come early, needing extra pens. Could easily be 25/100 atm, with several put up on Friday. Soon be taking some down to make a big nursery pen. Some years, we've put individual pens under the overhangs of the bullocks houses, and pens in the workshop. It gets interesting when half the flock lambs in 4 days!
