2013in the snow I had six ewes and their lambs in stock box and one in the telehandler bucket

That’s one thing I certainly don’t miss about indoor lambing. Back home we used to have two IW trailers with decks in. We always seemed to have a stage when there were 8 ewes and their lambs top and bottom in both, after we’d run out of all the other nooks & crannies we could ram them. :(

Never crossed my mind using a trailer, yet if something isn’t actually ill here it’s sent out soon after birth.
I do have a serious amount of shelter.
Exhibit A show’s lambs 24 hrs up to 2 weeks old not far from the cliffs taking full brunt of the storm.

Number of pens required will depend on so many different variables. Maternal ewes lambing at 150% will need a hell of a lot less than terminal sire/ cr*p maternal breeds that have a higher proportion needing a few days in pens, or a prolific flock needing a lot of fostering, etc. Way too many variables to give a ‘right’ answer.
I suppose the only answer is ‘enough’.

I am only lambing about 160 ewes indoors this year, which will have 36 indoor pens, then another 2 group pens that will holdup to 10 ewes in each, before they can go to another little shed that will hold up to 30 ewes if the weather’s bad.
I will fill those individual pens at the start, as I have 35 recipient ewes all due on day one, as well as those tupped naturally. Hopefully only be using half of them by a week later, but doesn’t always work like that.

Same pens will suffice for 550 lambing outdoors in April, and then usually only for ewe lambs that might have been handled.

We lamb outside, start mid March, 80 ewes, I made a couple of pens last year, used one. That was exceptional though but any ewe that draws attention to herself is gone asap. I'm getting too old to catch ewes in trouble.

14 per 100 here. We leave some galv hurdles dotted about the shed though to quickly make a pen up if need be. We have some old stables we use for mothering pens which help, so only have them in individual pens 12-24 hours

Yes lambing inside seems to be unfashionable but my Dad can help inside but outside he struggles

About 35 pens for 400 ewes lambing in march for about 6 weeks. Plenty of pens apart from the busiest week when we could do with about 50
