Lambs and brexit

Sorry folks, just what we need another brexit topic but..

Should we be aiming to get rid of all our hill lambs before the end of march next year?

These are small cheviot lambs from our hill flock. Hopefully they will be finished by then. Fingers crossed. The bulk of them usually are but there always some stragglers.

Just worried about what happens if deal/no deal?

There was a bit on Radio 5 this morning with an expert going through the likely options. She concluded that what was most likely to happen was a general election, followed by our actual withdrawal being delayed for a couple of months to allow the new government to get get organised. That scenario would give you plenty of time to get your hoggs away at top dollar @Dave6170 but it's still just informed guesswork.

Big cock up and going against the vote then?

I’d love to say don’t worry, easy for me to say with only 10 left.

Something will surely happen? Markets may well open up in China/Middle East?

What about the freight advantage NZ lamb has to these destinations? UK lamb will need to discount itself massively to calculate.

arnt we told that long range cargo transit don't cost much...

atchully its not a awful lot farther to Europe from NZ once they are loaded into containers.

More to the point is the fact that we are cocking a snook to a big established market for our lamb ….

Her guess was the PM will lose the meaningful vote in parliament, resulting in a vote of no confidence and then a general election. Somebody on here made a good point that if Labour got in, Corbyn would be keen to push Brexit through as some of his hard left policies would be stopped by EU law. But it would be reasonable to think that there would be a pause in the process.

Selling lambs will be like playing poker this year...................... do you feel lucky to hit the possible jackpot in April or fold in February / March.

The early lambing farmers are getting less and less, so if there is no trade restriction then I'm feeling confident that supply and demand will rally the price in late spring.

But what do I know...... I'm just an optimistic farmer !
