Lame sheep options

Hi all, I have a barren ewe with a rotten toe. She was unresponsive to antibiotics. I was hoping to send her straight to the abattoir with some store lambs which are nearly finished once the withdrawal period has ended. Can I send a lame ewe to the abattoir or do I need to get her sound first? Thanks

We need to have a day a month that lame animals can go direct to slaughter. Every livestock farmer has the odd animal that spends a huge amount of time lame and never gets better.

Kinder to transport it lame and kill it, than seeing it suffer for weeks on end !
I have footvax everything this year, its the best thing i have everdone. We usally have run of bad feet this time of year due to them being housed for lambing but had them out yesterday to muck the shed out and only had two with a slight limp out of 600 housed. Treated them and today both are better gave another dose of footvax . Wished i started to use it alot sooner.

I've been told by a few folk that if you're near a market holding a fat sale on a bank holiday then anything can go as the inspectors won't be working. Never had the guts to try it though.

It would be kinder still to have them slaughtered on farm. I can’t see sending lame stock to slaughter winning much approval with the public.

watch 1:50. You think this is the image our industry should be promoting?

I wasn't talking about ones as bad as that. That's a disgrace and shouldn't happen.

But I've had a couple destroyed over the years that must have had historical joint problems which stopped them marking the ground with one foot - certainly no visible cause that could be treated. They were otherwise fit (fat) and healthy sheep and it always seems a waste that they can't go for slaughter.

Home kill them. The economic advantage of slaughtering these few animals would be massively outweighed by negative publicity.

Apart from how the public feels. I wouldn’t want the reputation of being someone who takes lame stock to slaughter. They screw you over next time you take anything to them.
Wouldn’t sell sick or lame stock to anyone without explicitely telling them. Rather kill them on farm and feed to dogs or eat myself. Isn't that possible in England?

I thought you could send a lame sheep to an abattoir with a vets certificate stating it is fit to travel. The sheep then needs to travel in its own compartment within the trailer.I may be wrong though.
