Land drainage cost

I'm literally having some done at the moment. The easiest way to work it out is per metre run of pipe rather than per acre as it depends on how many runs etc are required, what spacings, size and type of pipes (and thus size of trenches and thus amount of stone) etc you use.

Its costing me about £9/m all in (pipe+stone+installation) for 4" and about £15/m for 6". That is expensive, partly because I'm using perforated twinwall rather than coil, and partly because I'm over speccing the pipe diameter because cheap narrow stuff is false economy IME. You could knock a couple of pounds/metre off if you use coil, plus it would be cheaper to install, so possibly closer to £5/m and £10/m respectively. But I'm fed up with coil silting up and not lasting long, so have bit the bullet and decided try and do a proper job that will see me out on a few really damp fields.

If you're planning to do anything get moving because stone and plastic prices are only going one way, and its not down!

Drained 4ac last year for about £3.5k, 9” main perforated twinwall with half a dozen or so spurs, a mixture of 6” twinwall and 4” coil, depending on the area & wetness. Backfilled with at least 12” of clean stone.
In my view, whatever you do don’t scrimp on the stone, it’s it that does the work.

old man had to put in a new soak away, for a cottage, contractor, advised, and did, use 2in perforated pipe, utter waste of time, lasted 3/4 years, the extra cost of 4in, would have been peanuts.
We are lucky enough not to need stone back fill, so draining = cost of digger, + pipe. All the drainage we do, is replacing old systems, we have never yet found a wet spot, where there isn't an old drain. l find it fascinating to see how, and what with, previous generations drained the ground, from withies laid in a trench, carefully and skilfully built herringbone stone drains, stone gouts, and everything else, to modern plastic. One thing is certain, it must have been a back breaking, miserable job, digging those drains by hand, some here, are 6/7 ft down, all dug by hand, not many, and then only through high spots, but, wow.
