land line or not?

got a new build and contemplating the need of a land line. With the use of mobiles and the amount of nuisance calls on the home farm house line and the cost was wondering if its needed.

I think I can get the use of Air band (wirelss connection) which would mean I wouldn't need a land line and negate the need for the payment of one also, but the misses want Sky tv so unsure if sky will work without a landline? anybody know?

regards

At the farm we have just switched from unicom to talktalk and it's appallingly slow now. 4g works better outside than the broadband inside.
I'm only saying Airband as a company as my neighbour has a mast which i pretty well have line of sight with .

In this day and age, wouldn’t want nor bother with a shitty copper pair - however (obviously!) I defintely wouldn’t say no to a nice piece of FTTP glass fibre being laid in!! Whether that’s a) available b) affordable is a different matter.

There are of course good wireless alternatives about, Rural WISPs and 4G being the obvious contenders and I have used 4G very successfully for the past 4/5 years or so, but there are drawbacks...

We only have Vodafone dongle box thingy now, and internet is just as quick as BT was. Circa 20 quid a month, for 50G l reckon.

Depends what you want Sky for, but have a look at NOW TV. If you're only after the movie packages or sport for example it can work out very well and pretty cheap too. There is a lag compared with live TV though which can be as much as 30 - 40 seconds, it may not matter in your situation though.

Yet to buy the router but been lent one that I think is unlocked.

It’s go to a 14 day returns policy so should be covered if I don’t have signal
In theory it should be fine unless they prohibit it by device IMEI (mobile identity)

They use EE as the network carrier, so coverage ought to be pretty good.

Try it out with your router and let us know how it goes!

Not trying to hijack the thread but any suggestions on how to best use this setup? SIM goes in to a compatible router but presumably you're then needing a half decent 4G signal wherever the router is? I'm sure this has been covered elsewhere but presume an outdoor aerial or booster would be the answer?

You need signal to make it work.

I get 2 bars in the loft which is enough, got cat 6 cable everywhere so transfer from loft to hub in cellar

I think you can get aerials etc to help
