Land Rover Discovery 4 engine seized

I asked our local Land Rover specialist who looks after our disco 4 about this and he is answer was , they seize because the oil doesn’t get checked and they do burn oil . And to be honest I had never checked the oil on ours and didn’t even know how to until he showed me , I had to add 2.5L to get it back to the full mark so it had burned about a 3rd in 8000 miles . It’s now done every wk and I have my fingers crossed. The sticker to tell you to check it is inside the fuel filler flap .

Oil burning is fairly common but the design flaw in the bottom end is what causes em to come to a sudden halt. Not all engines are affected mind. Plenty of knowledge on the net just google

Has anybody had experience with 2014/ 2016 discovery engines?

It's a well know issue with the 3.0 V6 Diesel in Discovery, Range Rover and Range Rover Sport. Usually attributed to spinning crankshaft bearings / journals - visit the RRS Forum, Discovery 3/4 Forum and FFR Forum - there is literally hundreds of posts on this subject.

There are also issues that have been reported that The extended LR Approved Used Warranty will allegedly not cover the repairs in some cases as it is a manufacturing defect.

A family member also had catestrophic engine failure in the V6 Diesel RRS which lunched on its internsls. Moral of all the above IMHO is avoid the V6 Diesel and buy the V8 Diesel

Is it only the 3.0 V6 diesel that sh1!s itself? Neighbour had a 2.7 in a Discovery 3 that did the best part of 500,000km that gave no problems with the engine or drivetrain.

No, brothers 2.7 V6 imploded several years ago - it was just out of Warranty - Main Agent said it was a known fault and LR contributed 50% to the bill.

I could go on, as we have been fairly big buyers of LR and RR's for over 45 years and in that time have had 4 total engine failures (I suppose that's not too bad when considering the amount of vehicles though - averaged out that's one failure every 11 years!)

My 2011 Disco 4's engine seized last summer. Land Rover claim the post 2012 engines have been modified to stop the problem. I know of 2 locally that have siezed the engine both under 2 years old one had only done 11000 miles.

My local independent Landrover outfit has a big sign up saying that the recommended service intervals are ridiculous, and says that you should service them earlier. I change oil snd filter on all my vehicles at 5000 miles, cheap at the price.
I really fancied s Disco 3 or 4, but due to sll the horror stories, including a friend in the village who has been quoted £1500 for new glow plugs, i bought a Hilux
(Now I suppose we'll get 2 pages of zhilux faults!)

Oil change intervals are completely irrelevant to this engine issue and even if it was relevant, which it isn’t, it would be very simple and cheap for LR to remedy by shortening the oil change interval.
Did you know that Ranger has 20,000 mile service intervals?

Hilux? Where do I start? The very current new model has a big issue with its DPF not regenerating properly and blocking. It seems that this is due to allegedly poor design of the emission system and specifically the position of the fifth injrctorin the exhaust, which is prone to failure due to carbon build-up. No doubt you will begin to hear more about this as more vehicles fail in service.

If I told you any of that I'd have to kill you.

People were in denial when I first brought up the issue of the V6 Diesel engines seizing, yet here we are a few years later and it is a generally recognised potential fault backed up with evidence from JLR themselves who do not deny it nowadays except to claim that it is not an issue on current build.
