Large pond/lake

I have recently bought a 12.5 acre field for training gun dogs
I want to build a large pond/lake for water training.
The current deluge of rain has shown that the field becomes a water meadow at this time of year and the land is rated Grade 4 and the Geological Survey Plan indicates the soil to be Tertiary Clay.
My understanding is that if I dig a pond/lake for my own enjoyment and to encourage wildlife, I do not require planning permission though I would need to liaise with EA as there is a stream running along the boundary.

Think you need to revise your understanding. You should have a better chance of getting away with it if you make it into an irrigation lagoon but keep below 10000 m3 otherwise you will be caught by the reservoir acts.

Mine is storage of water in case of fire. That ticked all the boxes but that was thirty years ago. Only stipulation was fire service needed access and they did come to check it was suitable.

Is there not a maximum size before you need planning permission? 1/3 acre springs to mind? If so, just dig two small ones next to each other...

Commercial use (fishing/boating) would need change of use planning?

Would an "irrigation lagoon" need an abstraction licence to go with it?

Op is only creating a pond therefore would not require abstraction licence if however pond was fed by a stream or water released into a stream then abstraction licence would be required.

I was told I needed a license to impound the water but if I filled it in the winter they would forgo this. Rules probably different now as you deal with the Environment Agency now but then it was Severn Trent Water in our area.

Thanks 360.

Yes I think maybe just get tractor and heavy roller and create large depression which will fill naturally, then as time goes by just increase the size
