Yes i bought one back in spring and i have to say i was surprised how well it worked. It has its limitations though which are mainly strong sunshine but in cloudy low light situations like now it works a treat.

I also like the look of these.

But how much does it discourage the birds from returning?
No more or less than anything else i would say. I was using mine on peas and it was great at 5 in the morning just before sunrise. i could stand and put pigeons out of all the surrounding trees on a 60 acre field with ease. I am anticipating that it will be good on the rape to in these cloudy dull conditions. The instant the beam goes on them they disappear in a hurry which surprised me as i thought it seemed a bit of a gimmick.
