Late drilling of OSR, (......is anybody other than us doing it this year ?)

After a good kicking in the 2019 year (crop harvest), by CSFB, the advice was to drill earlier or later than the previous common timing of end of August begining of September to cope with the migration of the CSFB. Is anyone planning to sow this year's crop later in September?. Judging by what is happening locally and reports on here, every one appears to have sown early.

Bit of a different climate here, but for my tuppence worth…….. Finished cutting 2020 sown OSR the other day. Drilled it early august, pee'd very heavily with rain, capped, re drilled some worse bits mid sept, finished up by 18 sept. Total fecking disaster, never drilling it beyond august again.

As an aside, best osr I grew was DK Excel, sown 14th September. Me on the solo and dad chasing behind with the freeflow. Soil like cack and drizzling at the time. Grew 7ft tall and huge yield. So hope!

The area that I haven’t yet drilled will go into the late slot, probably in a fortnight or so.

We have decided not to drill any as our land is bone dry and like concrete and there is no significant rain in the forecast for the next two weeks. Last time we drilled in these conditions I was a very expensive disaster so I won’t want a repeat of it .

I think there is more flea beetle around and a dry forecast which in my opinion isn’t a great recipe for success.

Haven't drilled any but spotted them in some cover crop today, also some plants suffering from a lot of damage..

Will grow some next year but behind w barley

I've lost a shitload to slugs.

I put in 1.5kg pellets with the seed, another 3kg /acre on top and slugs have still frickin murdered it.

No, if you've got some FFS what have you got to loose. Turnips and rape drilled early have been slow to move and now we've had a good rain anything going in the ground now will race away.

List first lot to slugs/hair pinning DD into chopped straw, light disc and broadcast this time on 1 block, where straws been removed on the other block going DD for 1st attempt

Depends on the year.

I once tried to use an over yeared part bag of Royal, IIRC it had Chinook seed dressing which borxed the vigour and it wouldn't grow into rough leaf. It was re-sown on the 23rd September (daughters birthday) and thanks to a kind autumn it yielded well at harvest. But 4 years out of 5 I'd imagine it would probably have succumbed to either shite weather or a biblical plague of slugs.

I’m going to redrill some this week. Just taken off the heap at a half decent rate. If it doesn’t get going then it will be back into cereals. HSS and DD, won’t be costly.
