Note the standard of the handwriting on them! Truly from a forgotten era.
Was there not a commemorative clock or similar given to all competitors at the national in times gone bye? Have vague memories of one on the wall in a late friends cottage.
My father used to write like that.

I was fortunate enough to be taught to plough by a now late, great ploughman. At 12 years old with a 2140 and 4f conventional ransomes it will always ring in my ears the time I looked ahead for a few too many moments, the holler of "what the f**k do you think you're doing?! You'll never make a ploughman looking out front!" Not many days in farming I don't miss the old boy, good few when I'm ploughing and thought, you'd be pleased to see this Hissy.

I didn’t know my Grandad, Sam Smith, but he must have been a good ploughman. He was awarded this certificate in 1935. I have it framed and hanging on my office wall, just like my late Dad did.

I do know he was an exceptional horseman so I would imagine it was awarded for ploughing with horses, but he was also a good tractor operator later in his working life.

All we can tell is that the certificate was awarded for Class 5 (V)

Does that mean anything to anybody? Does anyone know what Class V was in 1935?

Anyway, whatever it is, I love this little bit of family history.

My Dad, Graham Smith , was an excellent ploughman in his day too. He worked his way through the ranks and jostled for top spot in this area with his great friends and rivals John and Henry Truelove. Once he managed to buy his TS86 he did very well, but I think work and family life took away any spare time he had and the ploughing had to take a sideline.

The plough is still in family ownership and I have had Dads MF165 smartened up. We hitched the plough up one day 18 months ago and had a very enjoyable day making a complete mess of a bit of match ploughing!!

There certainly won’t be any certificates awarded for those efforts!
